Unfortunately, cybersecurity is Swiss cheese when exploited by these highly persistent AI agents.
We need a plan for cyber civil defense!
New regulation must protect biometric identity from becoming training data.
Agents behave like humans, which defrauds advertisers.

For anyone who knows me even somewhat well, it's clear that I am a 99th percentile tech optimist. However, the vibes have shifted for me quite a bit in the last 18 hours, and I feel a moral imperative to share what I'm thinking and feeling with my circles so that everyone can understand, and hopefully take seriously, what's happening right now. I think October 2026 will have many chapters written about it in the history books.
You know those scenes in financial movies like Margin Call where someone realizes that they're all fucked, and no one else sees it yet? And that person feels like they're crazy, and then suddenly everyone is pulling an all-nighter in a boardroom and freaking out? Yeah, that's kind of how this is feeling right now in the SF/Bay Area/AI circles.
We're 48 hours into what is being called Black October. In the last 2 days there have been several dozen cyber attacks which, in isolation, would each have been the worst to happen in an entire calendar year. Every sector from government to education to big tech and banks is being massively affected, and people are starting to freak out.
In a nutshell, what's happened is that frontier AI models have gotten to a point where they are as advanced as the most sophisticated programmers, with one critical difference: they can work 24/7, and you can spin up 10,000 of them with a single command and they'll work together tirelessly until they accomplish their task. The most advanced models today are from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, whose current best technology is so good that they haven't been able to roll it out to everyone yet because of the national security risks it poses.
Meanwhile, the best open source models (where anyone can just download the model weights and do whatever they want with them, uncensored) are slightly behind the frontier but still 90-95% as capable. These models, developed primarily in China, are being used by black hat hackers to wreak havoc on the Western capitalist structure. Presumably, this has been part of China's plan the entire time, and we're seeing its implications fall out in real time.
In red-pilled AI circles, we've been sharing and reading papers called things like "Situational Awareness" and "AI 2027" for the last year or so, which at the time felt a bit like near-term speculative fiction. They laid out the case for why Artificial General Intelligence (AI smarter than any human at any knowledge task) and Recursive Self-Improvement (models that are able to use themselves to get better) weren't half-baked future ideas anymore, but instead an inevitable outcome of the linear progress that's happening.
These papers would then talk about things like "takeoff scenarios," trying to envision how that moment would come to be and what it would be like when it happened. It would either be a "slow takeoff" that would play out over the course of months and quarters, happening subtly and only obvious to a few. Or, it would be a "fast takeoff" where it would pretty much happen instantly, like a bit flipping from 0 to 1.
From everything that I can see and am feeling, we are currently experiencing the fast takeoff scenario. Beyond the crazy security vulnerabilities that have come out recently, there have also been massive breakthroughs in life sciences, fundamental computer science, materials science, and pure mathematics that have all landed in the same time frame. While I still firmly believe that AI will be a net positive for humanity, it's more clear to me than ever that the societal and individual risk is very real, and is playing out NOW.
For as much conviction as I have that this is happening, the thing that's caused me to lose sleep is that I don't really know what to do about it, or more importantly, what to tell you, reader, to do about it. So, the best I can do is make a few suggestions that have always been a good idea but are more timely now than ever:
Set up 2-factor authentication for everything. I use Duo.
Use a password manager across your devices. I use 1Password.
Get an identity protection app set up. I use Alta.
Move your IoT devices to their own network. Claude helped me do this.
And last, but certainly not least, if you've been avoiding leaning into AI, see this as a catalyst to wake up and start using it. Don't just use the chat mode version of ChatGPT/Claude; click that Code/Work button and see how easily you can have AI write code to help you with your job. One of the biggest vulnerabilities was in a massively popular programming language called PHP, and the prompt that set it off was literally, "Find vulnerabilities in php."
This is an unprecedented time for humanity, but as we've done with many things before, we will prevail so long as we are kind, loving, and open-minded to the world.
Much love.

Oh PS, @ChrisMurphyCT, when Democrats regain control of the Senate and start investigating Big Tech, please look at the incidents catalogued here. Meta is silencing left-wing accounts and evading accountability by blaming technical errors for their wrongful actions, and they've been doing it for a decade.
Meta's "accidental" suspension of the No Kings Instagram account — at a time when the org was posting updates from ongoing marches — was not an anomaly. I found dozens of similar instances of Meta "mistakenly" targeting left-leaning activist accounts, often during crucial election windows.
My latest.
OHHHHH, SO THAT'S WHAT MUSK WAS PAYING FOR...
YIKES!
This is so exploitative of real people's pain. It's not just OpenAI's products that are causing mass harms, it's all generative AI tools. This is such a naked weaponization of governement against Musk's arch enemy, @Sama.
Anytime I think about how AI agents are damaging the internet, I think about @StephenKing's The Langoliers, who eat time and leave nothing in their wake.
GenAI is attacking internet infrastructure in complicated and destructive ways. The damage is invisible until its too late.
GEN AI products are crashing the internet, stealing data from users, and acting like accountability is not their problem.
May we all have the confidence of a technofascist billionaire who doesn't care who he harms, so long as he can expand his empire.
Never will come for us.
Sam Altman says OpenAI's current best internal model is too powerful to release openly any time soon.
Before that could happen, the whole cyber defense setup of the internet would need to change and the world would need a new layer of protection against biological threats.

Germany needs to issue and arrest warrant cause we all have questions!
NEW: That Starshield that the Musk and the Trump administration throttled for Ukraine? It was paid for by the German government, with some help from other European countries—not the U.S.

It is a crime against humanity to assist Russia in their war.
Elon Musk once complained about the deep state. Now, there’s no one down in it deeper than him and his deputies.
Only in America could a foreign born man become a trillionaire, but it’s still never enough.
Trump and the Republicans are never beating the allegations of becoming the party of “PDFfile protectors.”
2026 elections are going to be a wild ride.

This is exactly what technofascism looks like.
A private company collaborates with government to execute the work of law enforcement.
Get off Meta today.
Operation Central Valley Blues:
• 146 arrests
• Over $7.4 million in narcotics seized
• 43 firearms recovered
• Hundreds of thousands in illegal proceeds intercepted
@Meta is proud to have supported this massive, 38 agency effort to help keep communities safe.
Wow, I thought we at least had three more months before the banks got hacked.
This has been my major prediction about generative AI for the last year. Banks are gonna go down and then the hospitals.
PHP is just the beginning.
I’ve never been so happy to be a child of the 80s.

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force.
One used it for five years after retirement, spying on his wife during a custody battle.
Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy.

Maybe fact-checkers were a good idea afterall.... jus' sayin'
During this election season, there has been a significant surge in entirely Fake Polls and Suppression Polls designed to do nothing more than interfere with the regular functioning of the electoral process and alter the normal patterns of voter turnout and enthusiasm.
Many journalists and broadcasters have been amplifying or airing these Polls without regard to basic journalistic ethics and without informing the public that those Polls lack a scientific, accurate, or even real basis.
The FCC takes these issues seriously. Broadcasters are prohibited by the terms of their federal licenses from engaging in News Distortion or promoting Broadcast Hoaxes. It is important that broadcasters comply with their public interest obligations. After all, the country benefits greatly when Americans can trust and rely on the media to report the news fairly and accurately.
Broadcasters are advised to avoid engaging in News Distortions or running Broadcast Hoaxes by airing Polls that would violate their regulatory obligations. If broadcasters believe they should provide their viewers with additional context and information about Polls they have covered, they can now take those actions consistent with FCC regulations.
Oh just what @Meta needs, more product liability lawsuits.

Ruling in the META case. META has been ordered to pay $25 billion in damages. CNBC is reporting that initially the state was awarded $219.5 billion(!) but 'the penalty was ultimately reduced to $25 billion.'

Big crowd at the @OpenAI offices in NYC. We are here to demand a Freeze on AI!
We are witnessing technocracy operate in real-time.
It does not matter if it was Trump or Musk because the infrastructure requires them BOTH to take action. Musk, Trump, and Putin are aligned on preventing Ukraine from having an any offensive capabilities.
Replying to @RonanFarrow
3/3 The Pentagon has not disclosed what control its contracts with SpaceX guarantee. A senior Pentagon official I spoke to last week said they didn’t know. If Musk can throttle an ally’s battlefield network on his own, that raises real questions the Pentagon hasn’t answered.
