I am in Vilnius, with the colleagues from the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, at a conference organised by the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) and the Baltic Audiovisual Archival Council (BAAC). The theme of the conference is: Archives in times of peace and war: safeguarding audiovisual memory, identity, and authenticity. You may remember (we also held a presentation in Tbilisi) our project on the voice recordings made in the Caucasus (primarily in Tbilisi) in various local languages - made by the German linguist Adolf Dirr at the dawn of the 20th century. These include the earliest recordings ever made in certain languages - most likely in Svan and Tush (Batsbi/Tsova-Tush), and most certainly in Udi. We discussed this at the conference. My colleague spoke mostly about the technical aspects of the project, while I focused on the significance of the Udi recording. The website will also be ready soon.
