The Jiayuguan Pass lies in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province, marking the western end of the Great Wall built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is celebrated as the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven”. Construction of the pass began in 1372. To the south rise the snow-capped Qilian Mountains, while Heishan Mountain lies to the north. The Great Wall extends into the surrounding desert, guarding a strategic passage through the corridor.
Built of rammed earth, the inner city is protected by a series of defensive structures, including barbicans, an outer enclosure and a moat. In 1987, the Great Wall, including Jiayuguan Pass, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Today, visitors can climb the tower to admire the fortress rising majestically above the Gobi Desert, with the snow-capped peaks of the Qilian Mountains stretching along the horizon.

Longtan Park in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, brings together the region’s distinctive karst landscape and the ethnic cultures of southern China.
Twenty-four verdant, forest-covered peaks, including Crouching Tiger Hill and Beauty Peak, encircle a lake and two pools. The Leitan and Longtan pools are connected by an underground river, with their water temperatures remaining between 18 C and 22 C throughout the year. In winter, rising vapor creates a picturesque scene known as “Mist and rain over the twin pools”.
Liu Zongyuan (773-819), a renowned Tang Dynasty (618-907) writer who served as the regional chief of Liuzhou, once prayed here for rain on behalf of the people. His Prayer for Rain at Leitang has been carved on a stele, and the dedicated pavilion that preserves it still stands.
Inside the park, traditional-style villages represent the Zhuang, Yao, Miao and Dong ethnic groups, each reflecting its own customs. Spanning Jinghu Lake, a covered wind-and-rain bridge is modeled on Chengyang Bridge in Sanjiang, a celebrated example of Dong architecture, distinguished by its elaborate pavilions and upturned eaves.

In the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, no other food better represents local culture and cuisine than its traditional flatbread, called naan. Fresh from the tandoor — a cylindrical clay oven fueled by coal or wood — the bread glows golden brown, flecked with dark blisters where the dough has kissed the oven wall. The thin center stays pale while the thick rim darkens to amber. #ChinaBound #Xinjiang #Naan

This pear-shaped vase (yuhuchunping) stands 16.3 centimeters tall and is a prized piece in the Tianjin Museum collection. Its clay body is fine and white, the glaze lustrous as jade. On the belly, painted in enamel colors, two pheasants perch close together on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by herbaceous peonies in full bloom; the layered colors give the scene a sense of depth. Two lines of verse fill the space above the scene: “Green stems lift the dew-laden buds, red blooms rest beyond the railing”. A vermilion seal appears beside the inscription, while the base bears a square, four-character reign mark reading: “Made in the Qianlong reign (1736-95)”.
Bringing together poetry, calligraphy and painting, the vase opens like a scroll. Painted enamel porcelain was produced for the Qing imperial court: the plain body was first fired at Jingdezhen and then transported to the imperial workshops, where court artisans applied enamel decoration before the vessel underwent a second firing at low temperature. Reserved for the imperial household, such pieces were produced in limited numbers, and relatively few have survived.
