Today’s Guardian finds it "astonishing" that Russell Brand, convicted of one count of rape and three sexual assaults yesterday, was “embraced as a serious social commentator” when he returned to Britain in 2013. Embraced by whom, sorry?
The paper gives its own role in promoting brand Brand one single line, noting he had already written columns for it. Yesterday’s big Guardian piece on TV insiders said "Brand’s case has led to difficult questions for the BBC, Channel 4 and the production companies that worked with him." Hilarious...
On an unrelated note Russell Brand's 137 written contributions to the Guardian are still online - 17 of which are after 2013 and which concluded in February 2015.
Long after the Andrew Sachs voicemails, the paper ran his opinion on Thatcher the day after she died, ran a GQ awards column over a large chunk of the front page in September 2013, and ran his column blaming Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death on “extremely stupid drug laws.” Not to mention the fawning praise from Owen Jones and the entire Labour establishment, including the now-Prime Minister...
Today’s piece also sniffs that critics lavished praise on his memoir, quoting its tale of Brand trailing a classmate 200 miles to Wigan as an early warning sign.
That particular book was serialised in the Guardian.
In October 2014 the paper put on a ticketed Guardian Live event, with Owen Jones interviewing Brand. It was broadcast live from the Emmanuel Centre.
That day Jones penned a piece in the Guardian attacking the “all-too-smug, seen-it-all-before snottiness” aimed at Brand. Two months later George Monbiot named him a hero of 2014, calling him “the best thing that has happened to the left in years”.
Alan Rusbridger, the Guardian's editor from 1995 to 2015, claimed in Prospect Magazine in 2023: "I only met him once, when he was writing a popular football column for the Guardian, along with the occasional commentary piece." Funny, seeing as the football column was pre-2010 and there is a photo of them snugly on the sofa together at the Guardian’s morning conference in August 2013...
This is what we’re up against. How can we ever hope to have energy security or a thriving economy ever again when people are as brainwashed as this? I despair!

Yay, let's spend £trillions more on 150X more unreliable wind turbines and still not have a reliable grid. These people shouldn't be allowed out without adult supervision.
Replying to @7Kiwi
You're being very negative - if wind is able to supply only 4% of electricity, we obviously need 25x more wind turbines.
And when the rest of energy demand (transport, heating) has been converted to electricity, we'll just need ~150x as many turbines as we currently have.
OC, if the wind drops still further, there might be a problem...
It is with immense pleasure that I learn professional contrarian, climate nutter, nationalist apologist and weapons grade ignoramus George Monbiot declared Russell Brand “Hero Of The Year” in 2014. Says everything you need to know about Monbiot’s judgement.

UK used oil revenue to fund public spending. Exactly what the SNP did when it sold offshore wind licenses. Whether that was squandered is a matter of perspective. Personally I prefer a smaller state so might be inclined to say it was, that’s not your politics though is it?

70,000 people died in Gaza during the war. According to Hamas itself, 50,000 of them were Hamas fighters. And of the 20,000 “children” killed, 80% were male combatants aged 16-18.
The Gaza “genocide” is the biggest hoax of the 21st century.
Why do they lie all the time?
The Chancellor admitted that Scotland’s energy wealth would now be over £1 trillion.
But this wealth doesn’t exist — because the UK Government squandered it and pocketed the profits.
And that’s why Scottish households are paying £1200 more for their energy bills than Labour promised.
Taking control of our energy is not only crucial to build the wealth for Scotland’s future — it’s the only way to ensure that energy rich Scotland isn’t paying some of the highest bills across Europe.
Listening to this prick Burnham droning on about getting NEETS into work while casually destroying the oil and gas industry makes me puke.
The o & g industry provides exciting, well-paid opportunities for youngsters of all academic abilities, but no. Stick them in retail and call centres. That’ll work.
When you think about it, Scotland is governed by cranks. The Greens are self-evidently cranks, but the SNP are also. In an inherently left-wing country, with free healthcare, a generous welfare system, a liberal immigration policy, strict gun laws, high taxes and an excess of public employees, they insist they want to break away to be even more left wing, despite the act of doing so massively reducing our tax base, thereby rendering it impossible. This simply because they don’t like English people.
They are, by any rational assessment, cranks.

Germans seem to get a lot less shit for the Holocaust than white English people do for ending the slave trade.

I cannot fathom why evidentially sexually violent men are being brought into the country and left free to perpetrate evil acts
Every day - a new story
Countless girls' lives destroyed
But let's talk about slavery reparations instead
This is institutional and state sanctioned wickedness

*sigh* because the British press hasn’t spelt this out I will. (Is it spelled or spelt?)
Anyway … The EU believes its law takes precedence over Poland’s sovereign law (even its Constitution, wherever EU law applies)
Poland’s Constitution says it is the SUPREME law of the country (I agree)
Now Donald Tusk’s is battling his own people over control of Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, with police on the streets and the court’s leadership removed (because they disagreed with the EU’s position).
the European Commission is, of course, backing Tusk on the appointment of judges. ( as long as they agree with the EU position)
Brussels insists the Tribunal must respect rulings of the EU Court of Justice (because they believe their rule is superior to sovereignty)
AND They dare to call this “defending the rule of law”
And THIS ladies and gentlemen is why I voted to leave. You’re welcome 🔥

Nothing screams “Energy Independence” quite like making it illegal to drill for your own oil and gas while happily importing the stuff from Norway and the US - then locking the ban in so future governments need a full parliamentary majority to reverse your masterclass in self-sabotage.

Young Bob and I probably disagree on plenty, but he should be able to speak in public without being attacked. The police should be helping him do it safely, not arresting him for daring to do it at all
A quick update.
I've just been released after spending 24 hours in police custody. Unfortunately, I'm unable to say anything further at this stage.
Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out, offered support and kept me in their thoughts. It genuinely means a lot.
Please keep me in your prayers. I really need them right now.
The mental and physical strain this situation has placed on me and my family has been immense.
God bless you all. ❤️

A spectacular display of nationalist mental conflict.
Lara Bird is furious that Westminster supposedly “squandered” Scotland's £1 trillion in “energy wealth”, completely ignoring the fact that her own party spent the last half-decade trying to shut that exact industry down. The SNP actively opposed new North Sea drilling and the Cambo oil field to appease their Green coalition partners.
Spending years running a government that actively tries to leave fossil fuels in the ground, and then turn around and demand the hypothetical revenue from those exact unextracted resources to fund an “energy rich Scotland” is laughable.
Absolute political hypocrisy Lara.
