Kerry Dixon was the golden boy of Stamford Bridge. Off the pitch, a secret was destroying him. Born in Luton on 24 July 1961, he was rejected by Tottenham and Luton as a youngster and dropped into non-league football with Dunstable Town, scoring 51 goals to earn a move to Third Division Reading. When he joined Chelsea in 1983, everything clicked. In his first season he scored 34 goals to fire Chelsea to the Second Division title. In his second he scored 24 league goals (36 in all competitions) to win the First Division Golden Boot, sharing the honour with Gary Lineker. He became the first player to finish as top scorer in the Third, Second and First Divisions in consecutive seasons. By the time he left Chelsea in 1992 he had scored 193 goals in 420 appearances — the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time. He won eight caps for England and was part of the squad for the 1986 World Cup. He had the world at his feet. But Kerry had a secret. He was a compulsive gambler. It started when he was just 13. By the time he was a professional it was a full-blown disease. The money he earned from football didn’t go into savings. It went straight into the pockets of bookmakers. On the pitch he was the hero. Off it he was a desperate addict chasing the next bet. At one point, while earning £130,000 a year at his peak, he was £135,000 in debt. He had to beg his manager, Bobby Campbell, for help. Chelsea paid off his bookies with a lump sum to clear his accounts. But it didn’t stop him. The bets kept coming. The threats started. He lost three homes. His marriage broke down. He spiralled into drugs. In 2015 he hit rock bottom. He was involved in a fight in a pub, punched and kicked a man, and was convicted of assault. He was sentenced to nine months in prison, serving four. The man who was once the king of Stamford Bridge was now a prisoner. “When I was in prison, I had to look in the mirror,” Dixon later admitted. “I had lost my dignity, my freedom, and my family. It was all a direct consequence of my gambling addiction.” It would have been easy to give up. But Kerry Dixon refused to let his story end in a jail cell. When he was released he didn’t hide. He took a job as a heating engineer’s assistant — a plumber’s mate — working on boilers and pipes. The former England striker worked with his hands just to pay the bills. He wrote an autobiography called Up Front, laying his soul bare and admitting he was an addict. He sought help from the PFA and started rebuilding his life, one day at a time. “I’m still very much on the floor,” he said in 2016. “But the only way is up.” Slowly, painfully, he climbed. He reconnected with Chelsea. The fans never turned their back on him. He returned for matchday hospitality, sharing his story and warning young players about the dangers of gambling. He proved that the man who scored all those goals was still in there — just buried under years of pain, debt and regret. Kerry Dixon was not a perfect man. He made terrible choices. He hurt people. He broke the law. But he did something far braver than scoring a goal at Wembley. He told the truth. He showed that addiction doesn’t care if you’re a hero or loved by thousands. It will take everything you have, and then it will ask for more. And he showed that even when you’ve lost it all, you can still find the strength to start again. That is the real story of Kerry Dixon. Not the goals. The long, agonising fight back.

Sorry but this is a disgrace. Stop celebrating grown men whacking kids and old folks all over the place - Div 7 ffs. Shame he didn’t fancy playing for his first team. They were 45 all out!!! Compulsory retirements should happen in the lowest divisions to protect the game.

They’re all outrageous but this is the clearest of the lot 😂

Even clearer, watch his left hand, this was from last year when they needed 1 wicket and the other team needed 4 runs.

This is disgraceful. Slip should be banned for life. If true that the club know about it then they should be kicked out the league.

@Saltburncc First slip clicks his fingers to imitate an edge, bat nowhere near it and given out. This is about the worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen in cricket. Apparently, their keeper has a huge amount of catches this season. @talkSPORT @bbctms @SkyCricket @TailendersPod

Huge drama in North Yorkshire cricket, with *this* scorecard now looking particularly dodgy!

Jim White is an absolute twat and he’s either being an obtuse twat or he’s just a thick twat. I’m no fan of Jordan but he’s spot on here, Clarke had his arse in his hands because Tuchel was a bit spiky with him so he decided to stir and he’s also a twat.

90% of the soldiers on the first boats to hit the beach didn't live to see the end of the day. Look at those faces. Some of them never made it to 18. Never forget that they paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We live our lives the way we do because of them.

Alex Kershaw’s D-Day coverage has begun. Every year it is utterly exceptional. Do ‘Follow’ him and keep up-to-date with his posts:
Goodbye to England. Many of the 73,000 US troops who will see action on D-Day, just 48 hours away, are now being ferried to troopships. Photo by the great Robert Capa. @WWIIMemorial

Speak for yourself, the European away days in the Conference League are better than staying at home. Nothing like watching Chelsea in Europe 👍
Call me a fake fan but I’d rather have no european football next season over being in the conference league again.

Thinking about @CesarAzpi retiring reminds us of the display we did for him on his last game... This is the DNA we need at the club 💙
