- Around 100 BBC staff would be deployed to run an emergency RM radio studio stocked with enough food, water and fuel to keep it running for 3 days
- The BBC would broadcast pre-written Government scripts through the studio, including how to ration water, what to do if toilets stop working and which food to eat first (see scripts below)
- Radio masts would switch to diesel generators to keep broadcasts going for up to 72 hours without electricity
- BBC teams would use satellite phones to stay in contact, with agreed meeting points and backup arrangements if those phones stop working
- They would also report from emergency centres across the UK using satellite-equipped BBC vehicles to help keep information flowing to the public
- Emergency services would have alternative ways to communicate if mobile phone networks stopped working
- The Government is putting £70m towards aircraft that could restore mobile phone and internet coverage across the UK for over a week

Kraków Shooting Sunday morning update:
Some pretty grim details have emerged overnight.
Police have found three bodies at the gunman's home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, about 150 km northeast of Kraków.
They are believed to be his mother, father and sister, although their identities have not yet been formally confirmed.
The suspect's sister normally lived in Kraków and had apparently returned to Ostrowiec to visit her parents. Neighbours described the parents as friendly, sociable people. One said they had celebrated New Year's Eve together.
They also knew about the family's interest in firearms. According to one neighbour, the father and son regularly visited a shooting range together, sometimes every Sunday morning.
The suspect is 24 years old and had a firearms permit. Polish media report that he was a member of the Świt shooting club in Starachowice and had two legally registered firearms. His father reportedly owned another eleven.
That means the father and son had thirteen registered firearms between them.
The suspect reportedly trained as a lathe operator at a vocational school in Ostrowiec.
The defence minister has confirmed that he never served in the Polish military, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
As for his possible motive, there's still very little new information.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said yesterday that the gunman held very radical views and appeared to be fascinated by far-right ideologies. But we haven't yet been told what investigators found to support that assessment, whether he had links to any extremist organisations, or whether those beliefs motivated the shooting.
We also know more about the two police officers who confronted him.
They've been named as Jakub Kulik and Artur Morański. One suffered three gunshot wounds and the other was shot once. Both underwent surgery, and overnight reports described their conditions as stable, although their injuries are serious.
Jakub Kulik was previously a soldier with Poland's 6th Airborne Brigade and had only recently joined the police. His former military unit has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, specifically AB Rh-positive.
On how quickly the police responded:
The first emergency call came in at exactly 15:00:15 yesterday. Police say the first patrol began responding just 23 seconds later. By approximately 15:03, officers were already exchanging gunfire with the attacker. Thirty police patrols were deployed altogether.
Six people were killed in Kraków, four women and two men. Three Polish women and a British citizen have been identified among the dead. The identities of the other two had not been confirmed at last night's briefing.
Reports on the number injured range from 15 to 17, including the two police officers. Five of the injured are foreign nationals, from Austria, Germany, Portugal, Russia and Britain. The gunman was also wounded and remains in hospital.
Poland is observing two days of national mourning today and tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. Kraków has declared mourning until Wednesday.

#Austria: Russian spymaster Jan Marsalek claimed to have toppled Chancellor Sebastian #Kurz
- In messages sent on 22 October 2021 to Orlin Roussev (leader of a #UK-based Russian spy ring later jailed for over 10 years), Marsalek—the fugitive former Wirecard COO widely identified as a Russian intelligence asset—stated that “we’ve successfully toppled” the chancellor “by confiscating the mobile phone” of the person managing their “secret campaign financing.”
- He identified the man as someone who “was actually working for us for a while” and was now the target of a “witch hunt” by the former chancellor’s team, and shared a link to coverage involving Thomas Schmid, a close Kurz associate and former senior finance ministry official.
- Schmid’s phone had been seized by Austrian investigators on 12 November 2019. Data recovered from it became key evidence in corruption probes over political appointments, government advertising, and alleged misuse of public funds for party purposes.
- In early October 2021, prosecutors raided the chancellery, finance ministry, and ÖVP headquarters.
- Kurz resigned on 9 October amid the pressure. He has consistently denied the allegations.
- Marsalek’s message came two weeks later. He also said the rest of the chats had “killed” the chancellor and called the affair “quite a messy story.”
- Austrian investigators assessed that he “stated unequivocally that ‘they’ had ‘toppled’ the chancellor in a successful operation” and interpreted it as an admission of involvement in the phone seizure.
- The files relate to probes into support for a foreign intelligence service and interference in Austrian politics. However, they contain no independent evidence that Marsalek organized or caused the 2019 seizure (nearly two years earlier).
- Investigators also noted it was unclear whether “for us” referred to Wirecard or Russian intelligence. The matter remains under investigation.
- Marsalek has been on the run since Wirecard’s 2020 collapse, is wanted for fraud, and has lived in Russia while linked to extensive activity involving Austrian intelligence (BVT) and other operations.
- The UK seizure of Roussev’s devices produced hundreds of thousands of messages on surveillance, disinformation, and related plots, some shared with Austrian authorities.
- Kurz declined to comment; people close to him said he viewed the original allegations as politically motivated and was shocked by any possible Russian link. Austrian interior ministry officials declined to comment on the ongoing probe.
