The real cost of the EU ‘reset’
In his latest article on the @BritainUnbound website, @johnredwood explains how, from food standards to fishing and energy, the Government’s reset risks higher costs and fewer freedoms... ✍️

"Regulation includes the measures to achieve Net Zero and these add costs, because the capacity to be built is replacement capacity, not new capacity, and the capacity being retired has not necessarily reached the end of its useful life."
A succinct #NetZero summary.

The EU's role in the collapse of the UK car industry
"Output peaked at 1.92 m vehicles during 1972, our last year before entering the EEC. During our first decade in the EEC and its Customs Union output slumped to 868,000 by 1982"

Interesting take on Brexit's impact on UK manufacturing... 👇🤔
(Also, good to see someone else making the point that Britain’s sluggish growth in GDP per capita may be due to mass immigration!)
Someone noted an interesting aspect of this chart: Brexit’s impact on the industrial production and UK economy. And I know, Brexit didn’t happen in December 2015, but that’s a rounding error. The leading narrative is that leaving the EU despite all its regulations and bureaucratic overreach decimated Britain’s industry. Yet look at industrial production in the UK, France, Italy, and Germany since Brexit. Isn’t that intriguing?
Maybe Britain’s stagnant GDP per capita isn’t due to Brexit, but to mass immigration diluting prosperity per capita?
Another great example of how Brexit polling shifts when the issue of sovereignty is raised... 🤔
In this case, 47% agree that the UK Government should control who comes into Britain, even if this means a more limited relationship with the EU 👇

Good spot from our Advisory Council member @julianhjessop - two more charts putting the merits of trying to realign with the EU in perspective... 👇
ICYMI, two interesting charts from the latest Deloitte CFO survey...
1⃣ 'trade relationship with Europe' ranks relatively lowly as a constraint on UK competitiveness; of course it might also impact others, but attempts to realign with the EU are more likely to increase 'uncertainty' and add to 'regulation'...
"Burnham must not seek to reverse Brexit – that won't fix Britain's problems"
Another Labour MP sticks their head over the parapet...

Six tests that show rejoining is not as easy as some present it – indeed it's technically impossible as there is no rejoin process – it is an accession process, which means joining anew – and that's very complicated as well as undesirable – by Jon Stanley bit.ly/3VDfzDj
Is the Bromance off before it even began? How can the Burnham Gov consider joining the EU or just the Customs Union or even alignment when it will not adopt EU tariffs? Seems like Brexit freedoms (aka sovereignty) are actually more important. Does that mean the PM has been virtue signalling all along?
EXCL: The business secretary has hit back at European demands for British tariffs on Chinese imports, saying the government will not change its trade rules because of pressure from Brussels.
Jonathan Reynolds warned the government would not bow to calls from other countries for the UK to hit Chinese vehicles with import taxes, despite political pressure to align with EU in exchange for deeper future economic ties.
Great interview from @kiranstacey in Mumbai

It really is depressing to see public speakers like @benjaminbutter use their platform to share idiotic soundbites like this.
If 41.3% of our exports go to the EU, then 58.7% are going elsewhere. Following EU laws on the 41%, would hurt the 58%.
58 is larger than 41 Benjamin.

A bugbear... 😠
One of the many ways in which Rejoin MPs (especially from the SNP and LibDems) mislead on Brexit is by attributing dodgy figures to the "House of Commons library" or "parliamentary research"... 🙄
What actually happens is that HoC staff are asked to estimate what, say, an imaginary 8% hit to GDP might mean for tax revenues, or simply to summarise the results of external studies.
It is clearly misleading to present the answers as definitive parliamentary analysis of the impact of Brexit! 🙄

There's yet another Westminster Hall debate later today on the UK applying to rejoin the EU.
We expect some or all of these 'zombie statistics' to reappear, all debunked below... 👇
“4% hit to productivity” / “4% hit to GDP”
“15% reduction in trade”
“£100 billion”
“2.2% of GDP” / “£25 billion”
“8% of GDP” (based on “doppelgängers”)
“6% of GDP” (based on micro-level modelling)

Oh dear. Andy Burnham's attempt to smear Brexit as the product of a sinister Russian disinformation campaign has already been exposed as nothing more than… disinformation.
During a car-crash set of interviews this morning, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty admitted that no Kremlin attempt to interfere with Brexit had succeeded. Not that Doughty didn't try his damnedest to avoid stating the obvious.
