My first post on my new Substack: Schools are becoming less safe across almost every metric, and we will need more than gun control to make schools safe again. writteninstone.substack.com/โ€ฆ

something I've found interesting is that even with this ongoing trend, at the same time people have reportedly become less trusting of their neighbors and less connected to their communities but iirc research into places without dynamism suggests the opposite should happen
This is very worrisome. Geographic mobility has historically been a key ingredient in the dynamism and adaptability of the US economyโ€”and an crucial way for individual workers and families to seek out a better life. Now it is evaporating before our eyes.

Slovakian sees a video about American suburbs and posts questions to Reddit. The level of bafflement is hilarious and appropriate.

Mortgage rates are rising rapidly as the Federal Reserve tightens policy, with 30yr rates crossing 5% for the first time since 2011. The housing shortage should keep rents and housing demand high, but it'll be critical to watch how home prices and homebuilding are affected.

Where exactly are millennial professionals allowed to live? We got yelled at for living in our parents' basements. We canโ€™t live in big expensive cities, b/c weโ€™ll gentrify or price out retirees. We can't live in smaller, cheaper towns, where we'll displace the locals.
Remote work isn't creating homelessness, a lack of housing is. This is the most dishonest framing of the housing crisis I've ever seen.

everyone talking about US fiscal policy should be forced to state where they think we are right now (hint: it's 100% C)

While many experts argue that cities are more energy-efficient than suburban or rural communities, our latest poll finds that most Americans believe the opposite. 75% of Americans believe it's better for the environment if houses are built farther apart. today.yougov.com/topics/poliโ€ฆ
Imagine living here and thinking rural conservatives are the ones who don't care about the environment.

5/ Next, we subtract out housing costs from wages to document the housing-inclusive urban wage premium by skill group; College workers continue to experience a strong housing-inclusive urban wage premium, but by 2010 non-college workers face a housing-inclusive urban penalty.
