Third year running General Entomology lab, second year having no idea how I want to teach Lepidoptera ID
Statistical pet peeves (especially in ecology) that I should drill into students' brains early?
We're not doing stats in great depth, but we are spending time on how to think carefully about data, etc.
I'm already going to yell about ordinal data a lot
Here's a fun one, entomologists - which parts of anatomy/morphology *truly* need to be memorized? I'm leaning
parts of the leg yes
mouthparts yes (to a point)
sections of the cuticle *no* (memorize the functions yes, regurgitate the terms endo- exo- epi-, not needed)

WE HAVE REACHED A FULL TENTATIVE AGREEMENT! @MIT MOVED BECAUSE OF OUR STRIKE THREAT! UNION SECURITY, REAL RECOURSE, AND ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENTS WON!
Favorite supplemental resources (for students) for General Entomology? I love NCSU's General Ent site, for example, but I'm sure there are other good ones
Was telling my students about how entomology collections share specimens and send things around, one said "it's like Pokémon," so naturally I got to tell them about how Pokémon was based on insect collecting in the first place
Something I've never quite understood myself - for insect nymphs very similar to the adults (Heteroptera, Blattodea, etc.), why do the nymphs shrivel when pinned, and adults don't? Something different about the chitin before that final stage?

New article by our curator, Dr. @CorrieMoreau, and @CornellEEB grad students @meganbarkdull_, @ColleenEcology, and @MoniquePipkin- parents and kids, check it out!
Do you know a kid interested in nature, science, or natural history museums? @meganbarkdull_ @ColleenEcology @MoniquePipkin and I wrote a fun paper for @FrontiersIn Young Minds titled "Natural History Collections: What Are They and Why Do We Need Them?"
kids.frontiersin.org/article…

ALT Figure 3 from the publication showing: Three distinct aspects of natural history collections. First, scientists use natural history collections to help with research. Second, the public interacts with natural history collections through museum exhibits, to learn more about biodiversity. Third, you can help collections yourself, by collecting and donating specimens, or volunteering online (Figure credit: Charlotte Welker Holden)!

Thanks sooo much to @EntsocAmerica for supporting entomologists that are also caregivers. This is so encouraging! 🦋🐞🐝🪰
Asking favors again - any ento folks willing to glance over my General Entomology schedule quick? It's just dates and topics, not a full syllabus or anything. Debating between 3 "blocks" vs 4 (for exams), and want to make sure I didn't miss anything
This is nice - I just found out that Cranston put the proof PDF of Gullen & Cranston's "The Insects" online for free, due to the pandemic
More specifically, it's on his ResearchGate!
researchgate.net/profile/Pet…
So of the folks still here - any entomologists willing to give my collection requirements doc for Entomology this fall a look? 3 pages in Word, a second pair of eyes would be great.
Just learned tonight that Deep Purple's "Hush" was a cover

I'm sitting on the ground watching extremely small phorid flies harass individual ants, like not even ants can go outside without some little thing bothering them

As an immunocompromised journalist the framing of “prepare to get sick” blows my mind. Why can’t we frame these stories as “here’s how to lessen the risk of getting sick AND be ready for if/when it does happen?” Both are important! – at Buffalo, NY
It’s time to stock up on tissues, bingeable TV options and Covid-19 tests. Yes, many signs are pointing to a Covid-19 summer surge – although one that’s far less intense than what emerged the past few summers. cnn.it/3rUHrnp

#Moth fact! Many unrelated moths have clear, see-through wings without scales. It’s not just hummingbird moths that have clear wings. This one, Sesiidae. Photo: S. Padron #MothWeek #NationalMothWeek

A statement from the Labor Politics Group on APSA's deeply disappointing decision: We continue to ask @APSAtweets to move online in keeping with @UNITEHERE11's request and are organizing alternatives. Please read and share widely! docs.google.com/document/d/1…

Replying to @KathTX
I am on APSA Council and a number of us argued hard for honoring the strike, but lost. Also, the Council did not vote on the statement, it was issued after the meeting today. The statement does not reflect my views (it's so tone deaf). Sorry we failed
