"The Roots have demonstrated that a community can build a compelling professional soccer brand. What they have yet to prove is that such a club can sustain itself without the financial resources traditionally required to compete in American professional sports."
The Oakland Roots have been a model for sports franchises that center community. But does America have a space for such anymore?
On this critical moment for Oakland’s pro soccer team and what their predicament conveys about modern sports

The powers that be are turning college football into something you watch on your couch with social media and a gambling app open, instead of it being a communal celebration.
And that is not sustainable for people caring about it long-term.

Matt Wells on Wayne Frederick's assist:
It comes from me winding him up. I was so angry with him. If he learns to believe in himself as much as I believe in him, then he's going to be a top player. I was shouting 'I told you so.' He is capable of running football matches.

Saturday was lights out at Centennial Stadium for 2026. Denver Summit can still make the playoffs, but they'll be the road team the rest of the way no matter what. Covering the inaugural season was so much joy. Excited to keep covering Women's Soccer.
I spoke to Joe Shaw about his book, Miami Before Messi, a history of the Miami Fusion. Even found a way to connect it back to the Rapids. A butterfly flapped its wings at Lockhart Stadium and Pablo Mastroeni went from almost undrafted to Rapids captain.

Just a few months into his MLS career, Donovan Phillip carries the weight of an entire island. Come learn about the only Saint Lucian in MLS. A man who grew up on football, isn't sure about Halloween, and might have been a cricket star.
