How college coaches actually evaluate high school hitters.
I spent 2 years as a hitting coach in the Orioles organization
Some of the players I was sure wouldn't make it are in the big leagues right now.
Projecting hitters is hard. Here's what coaches look at 🧵

One of the hardest parts of the recruiting process is not knowing where you stand.
Maybe coaches were calling and texting, but suddenly everything went quiet.
Or maybe the phone hasn't rung at all.
Either way, you start questioning things.
Are coaches interested?
Am I good enough?
Will I get an opportunity to play college baseball?
Those feelings are normal.
But here's something players and parents need to understand:
Every recruiting timeline is different.
Several factors influence when things happen:
Your skill level
A program's recruiting needs
College coaches' schedules
The time of year
Your graduation class
Some players receive interest early. Others don't hear much until later in the process.
And while silence doesn't necessarily mean a lack of interest, it doesn't guarantee interest either.
Don't let the amount of attention you're receiving determine how you feel about your ability or your future.
Keep developing, be proactive in communicating with coaches, and focus on what you can control.

Contact play: off on contact and ball hit to 3B take a inside lane to cut off the throw. Establish your running lane on contact!

Steve Holm, Illinois State head coach, has told me this more times than I can count, and tonight he told me again tonight:
If a high school hitter cannot give the program fifty at-bats as a freshman, or a pitcher twenty-five innings, they do not recruit him.
Not because the player is bad. Because there are thirty-four spots, more money per spot, and a transfer down the road who has already done it.
So the question for your son is not "do they like me." It is "where would my fifty at-bats come from." A coach who answers with a position and a name is recruiting him. A coach who cannot is collecting him.
More on this next Tuesday.

Junior families: this is the month your son moves from invisible to evaluated. The coaches building spring follow lists are reading September emails, fall production, and transcripts right now. He does not need offers in October. He needs to be findable, productive, and on eight target lists in his own handwriting.

THE SABAN STANDARD
"Mediocre people don’t like high achievers, and high achievers don’t like mediocre people. So if everybody doesn’t buy into the same principles and values of the organization at the same high standard, you’re never going to be successful."

Parents, if any of these “scouts” approach you from these services:
NCSA
Field Level
NSR
SPORTS RECRUITS
GO BIG RECRUITING
They will take your money, create a profile on a website that nobody uses and never return your calls or answer your questions.
RUN AWAY‼️

On my show this month, I said it plainly, and a Division I head coach agreed on the spot: every place is a JUCO now. Western Kentucky is a JUCO. A D3 is a JUCO. In the transfer era, every program is a two-year stop, and every roster is rebuilt annually. Marc Rardin's words: exactly correct. Plan your son's path with that fact in the middle of it, not the fine print.

Traits of baseball toughness.
The ability to move on to the next pitch, next at bat, next play, next game, etc.
Do not let what has already happened affect what is next.
A bad at bat, an error, bad pitch, base running mistake, etc., should not snowball.
Selfish players are not capable of being tough because winning as a team does not mean enough to them.
