From a zero-star recruit with no FBS offers to an All-American.
I talked to coaches and family from all points of #UCLA RB Wayne Knight's journey.
Check out my profile for the @latimes on the 5-foot-7 tailback before the Bruins face the Spartans.

Ty on what it meant to celebrate with his Dad:
"I remember when I first started playing quarterback during Covid, in high school, we were out in the morning just throwing the ball around. He was out there in his gardening gloves catching the ball for me."
Ty on engaging with the fans:
"It means the world to me. It has been a crazy last couple weeks for this program with our starting quarterback going down. But I just think that it’s the way everyone has been kind of taking me in, just being there for me."
Ty on containing the returner:
"Just get in front of them. Hopefully you can delay them for someone to come and hit them. But at the quarterback position, people don’t really want to see the quarterback do that. For me, I will do whatever for
this team."
HC Bob Chesney on how his players don't flinch when things are not going their way:
"They're all in. They feel like they're 100% positive that they can win every single game when they walk on that field. They're confident. They don't overthink about anything and it's special."
Chesney on the camaraderie of the RB room:
"It's a brotherhood in that room, and it's not the easiest thing to do... As much as you want to be the guy that carries the ball 40 times a game. It's not feasible to exist at this level in this league with that many carries..."
Chesney on the aggressiveness of his offense:
"There were moments there in the fourth and late third where that box got pretty loaded, and we should have taken some shots on the outside. But at the same point, you're trying to run this clock out and get out of here with a win."
I asked Bob Chesney what it meant for his QB to track down the returner on the FR:
"It's 14 points is what Ty ends up saving there. I thought Ty's response at that moment of making sure he held that kid up till help showed up. It's everything. It's realistically 14 points."

No. 9 UCLA overwhelms Michigan State as Bruins continue their stunning turnaround season latimes.com/sports/ucla/stor…
It was always going to be the Bruin Bullies’ day.
After forcing three turnovers and four sacks against one of the least productive offenses in the country, UCLA trounced Michigan State 28-10.
The Bruins improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2005.

HC Bob Chesney said at his postgame press conference that RB Wayne Knight was hit in the side/ribs/oblique area. He clarified that it was nothing dangerous and he probably could have gone back in but the staff wanted to be precautionary.
#UCLA doing its typical third quarter to fourth quarter dance as the Bruins lead 28-7 with 15 minutes to go.
UCLA's offense was forced to punt, but Shane Rosenthal downed it on the one-yard line.
I imagine Hitschler dials up some pressure for the true freshman QB.
The injured player is #19, Ryan McCulloch. He was a Cal transfer who returned late this season from injury. He also suffered some injury issues at Cal.
