A note on Paraguay: we aren’t just mad because we can’t access our money (although that in itself is awful), but because said bank went bankrupt because they used PUBLIC FUNDS to give out GIGANTIC loans to people connected to the president
Rubio is going to tout his record on Latin America as part of an anti-Socialist campaign. It’s probably not good for him that Paraguay’s president (a close ally) just resigned amidst scandal and financial collapse.

🚨 Cae un gobierno de derecha dura en Paraguay con esta renuncia del presidente Santiago Peña.
Peña se vio atrapado en el escándalo de Ueno Bank, un banco que se declaró insolvente y fue intervenido por el Banco Central. Los ahorros de sus clientes fueron congelados, como pasó en el corralito en Argentina y en el feriado bancario en Ecuador, desatando masivas protestas ciudadanas. Una vez más, la política neoliberal de desregulación de la banca causando estragos en América Latina.
Pero Peña además tenía acciones en el grupo bancario, a quien además su gobierno le habría transferido US$850 millones de fondos públicos, incluidos recursos de jubilaciones.
Entre denuncias de conflictos de interés y el abandono de su propio partido político ante un inminente juicio político, el escándalo terminó por precipitar su caída.
Una renuncia no menor en un Paraguay que muchos celebraban como parangón del crecimiento económico. Y otro factor que podría acelerar el fin de ciclo del grupito de gobernantes del Escudo de las Américas.
