Prevention and care for noncommunicable diseases should reach everyone, whoever they are and wherever they live. Underserved communities, people living with disability, people who are unemployed and migrants face extra barriers to care. Services designed with them in mind leave fewer people behind. The virus causing polio was discovered in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper. Landsteiner was later awarded a Nobel Prize for another discovery, that of human blood groups. Today polio is almost eradicated thanks to a safe and effective vaccine. #endpolio

This World Mental Health Day, the theme is "Lived experiences heard: Real voices, real change". Behind every statistic about mental health is a person, and only by listening to those voices can we work to improve mental health services. Many of the people who shape our work have first-hand experience of mental illness, as patients, carers or family members. Their perspectives sit alongside clinical expertise in the information we produce. You can read our award-winning information on mental illnesses and mental health problems, which is written by doctors with input from patients and carers. ➡️ rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/… For young people, parents and carers, we have dedicated information on young people's mental health, written to help families understand what young people are going through and where to find help. ➡️ rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/… If you're looking for support or want to understand your options, our pages on support, care and treatment explain what treatments are available and what to expect. ➡️rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/… If you'd prefer a printed copy, you can also order our mental health leaflets, written by doctors for patients and carers. ➡️rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/… #itsokaynottobeok #WorldMentalHealthDay

Stronger mental health involves people with lived experience. Governments and policy-makers and #MentalHealth professionals can improve care by working with and including people with lived experience, making sure their voices shape mental health laws, policies and services. Bring people with lived experience to the decision table from day one. Meaningful engagement leads to services that are more accessible, inclusive and responsive to people’s needs. Ahead of #WorldMentalHealthDay tomorrow, new WHO guide to support countries in shifting away from institutionalized mental health care models towards person-centred care in the community that respect people’s rights and choices bit.ly/4yJjvBc

Misophonia can cause intense feelings of distress, anger, or panic. This can happen when someone hears chewing, sniffing, tapping, or other #sounds. “The response can feel immediate and involuntary, and some people avoid shared meals, classrooms, workplaces, or social situations to escape triggers,” comments Fernandez. He emphasizes that these feelings are real, even if others are not bothered by the same sounds. It is important to know that #misophonia is brain-based. Understanding this can help reduce blame, conflict at home, and misunderstandings at school or with friends. Read more here: medicine.yale.edu/news-artic… @YalePsych

A recent breakthrough published in Nature Neuroscience fundamentally changes our understanding of human biology, revealing that the brain develops as two separate structures rather than a single unified organ. For decades, the standard scientific consensus held that all regions of the brain originated from a single population of neural stem cells that slowly diversified. Researchers have now demonstrated that the brain is actually a composite structure built from two entirely distinct cellular lineages that emerge simultaneously during the earliest stages of embryonic development. One specific group of progenitor cells is exclusively programmed to form the forebrain and midbrain, the neural regions responsible for higher-level cognitive processes, memory, and complex thought. A completely separate and parallel group of cells is hardwired to construct the hindbrain, which manages vital, life-sustaining autonomic functions like breathing and heart rate. These two populations possess completely different epigenetic landscapes, meaning their genetic accessibility is locked into their respective developmental paths from the very beginning and strongly resists outside signals to change course. This dual-origin system represents an ancient evolutionary blueprint that has been conserved across multiple species for roughly 550 million years. Mapping this fundamental division provides crucial insights for the future of regenerative medicine and neurological research. By understanding the highly specific cellular origins of the hindbrain, scientists can now accurately recreate these precise tissues in the laboratory, paving the way for targeted therapies addressing life-threatening neurological disorders and specific pediatric brain cancers. Superb speech from @AshleyDalton_MP . She is absolutely correct. Suicide risk is highest after diagnosis. Depression does not exclude people having assisted death in this bill. The bill includes no requirement for a psychosocial assessment. I am in awe of her strength and courage.
