Some late Cretaceous ammonites bask near the oceans surface. This art was made for the fantastic paper released by @JoeFlanSan in @NatureComms .

I'm more interested in the metaphysical implications of generating a thousands of new Jesuses. Are they all new prophets? If we crucify them can we automate mass forgiveness? Much to consider.
men were more than twice as likely to save the pedophiles while women were more likely to kill them. what mean

A few bowhead whales born around 1815 might still be alive. They were in their 30s when they first saw a commercial whaling ship; in their 60s when they first heard a propellor; over 100 the first time they heard sonar. I wonder if they remember the silent ocean.
the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

Being swallowed by a giant sea creature is one of humanity's oldest and most repeated stories, across cultures and religions. Acting like this film is some unique evil because it engages with the trope is performative nonsense.
Setting aside the offensively stupid premise, there is something about the spirit of this plot — clinging to the monsterization of profoundly intelligent, social creatures that we feared for centuries and massacred in wanton ignorance — that is uniquely corrosive and hateworthy.

Especially silly to critique it down these lines when the movies premise absolves the whale of any fault

Breaching Tylosaurus my beloved
#FossilFriday New work by @Formorphology just out in Current Biology quantifies burst swimming speeds in mosasaurs! Based on her results, this is how we imagined a fully-grown Tylosaurus could successfully breach. Paper below

The monsterverse really isn't the sort of franchise to expect taxonomic rigor from.
How did it take THIS long to get dinosaurs in the Monsterverse? Assuming these are in fact dinosaurs and not some weird taxonomy-defying bullshit like the death jackals.

Meet Planctoteuthis sp. 🦑 “Images have finally enabled the description of this tail, but no one knows what it is used for. It looks like a siphonophore from a distance, and one hypothesis is that it could be used for siphonophore mimicry.” — #SamplingGap Co-chief Sci Dr. Perez

The "Karetai Carcass" was entangled in the lines of the vessel where it had been fed upon by cookiecutter sharks. The original film was recovered from the first mate of the Karetai after the publication of the image in 2019. Analysis of the image has been inconclusive thus far.

When you hear people say “let them drown”, this is what those words mean.

I just don't see how you can have Twin Peaks the return anywhere outside of the top 10. It is one of the defining art pieces of the 2010's and exists in full conversation with the medium of nostalgic revival TV and prestige drama which defined the era.
The New York Times’ final list of the 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century is now complete. What do you make of the final ranking? Which placements surprised you the most?

Russel Crowe in master and commander is, in the films eye, the coolest and most competent man who ever lived.
Are there any movies where the protagonist is not, at any point in their character arc, an underdog? Are any of them good?
