Nobody drew the orange lines.
Melting ice, a flame front, a sheet pressed onto stones: three free boundary problems, simulated, and the equations put each edge where it is.
Seven weeks on them at the CRM, until 4 December.

In response to OpenAI's 'solving' of 100s of maths problems, mathematicians stress that maths is not just about solutions, but also about the journey. Indeed, the techniques used in one direction may even produce progress in another. Here's Ramón.

Four directors in forty-two years.
At Monday’s Welcome Event, the red velvet came off the portraits of the first three in our new Directors’ Gallery: Manuel Castellet, Joaquim Bruna and Lluís Alsedà.
Plus 2025 in figures and three research talks:

Off the Blackboard #1, la nostra proposta dels divendres:
'Humble Pi' (2019), de Matt Parker. Era professor de matemàtiques abans de pujar a l'escenari, i el llibre recull casos reals en què un càlcul va fallar.
Gairebé tots fan riure. Alguns, no.
Bird flocks, fish schools, bacteria swimming in a drop of water: crowds in which every particle propels itself. On Friday 23 October, Maria Bruna (University of Oxford) gives a minicourse at the CRM on stochastic particle systems and macroscopic limits in active matter
🧵
The second takes a lattice gas of active and passive particles that can't overlap and derives its exact hydrodynamic limit: nonlinear PDEs with phase-separated states and travelling solutions.
It's largely self-contained: if you know the area, come for that hour alone.

Today is Ada Lovelace Day. In 1843 she published a program for a machine that nobody ever finished, Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, so the program never ran. In 1950 Alan Turing argued with her anyway. 🧵

Antoine Claudet photographed her around 1843, the year of her notes. She died in 1852, at 36, as her father had, and was buried beside him at her own request.
