πΌπΏ California Native Spotlight β Brittlebush
A little sunshine growing right out of the desert!
Meet brittlebush (Encelia farinosa), a beautiful California native shrub with brilliant golden-yellow flowers and striking silvery-gray leaves.
πΌ Its tiny leaf hairs help reflect sunlight and reduce water loss in hot, dry environments.
π Its cheerful flowers attract native bees and other pollinators.
πΏ Brittlebush has a fascinating cultural history, including traditional uses by Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. Its resin and stems have served a variety of purposes.
βοΈ This resilient shrub thrives in sunny, well-drained desert environments and can bring a spectacular splash of yellow to otherwise dry landscapes.
Another wonderful reminder that California's native plants are perfectly capable of putting on a beautiful show without a lush green landscape!

πΊπΏ California Native Spotlight β California Fuchsia
Sometimes the smallest flowers put on the biggest show!
Meet California fuchsia (Epilobium canum), also known as hummingbird trumpet. This beautiful California native perennial produces brilliant red-orange tubular flowers that hummingbirds absolutely love! β€οΈπ¦
πΏ A few fascinating facts:
πΊ Its tubular flowers are especially well suited to hummingbirds, whose long bills and tongues allow them to reach the nectar.
πΊ California fuchsia blooms primarily in late summer and fall, providing an important nectar source when many spring wildflowers have disappeared.
πΊ Its silvery-gray foliage helps it tolerate California's hot, dry summers.
πΊ It naturally occurs in parts of Southern California, including mountain and foothill habitats, and is a wonderful addition to a California native garden.
I love discovering plants that are not only beautiful but also play such an important role in supporting our wildlife.

πΏ California Native Spotlight β Thickleaf Yerba Santa πΏ
Sometimes the most fascinating plants are growing right in our own backyard!
This is thickleaf yerba santa (Eriodictyon crassifolium), a California native shrub known for its soft, woolly leaves and beautiful clusters of lavender to purple flowers.
Yerba santa is well adapted to California's dry chaparral environments. Those fuzzy leaves help protect the plant from intense sunlight and reduce moisture loss. When blooming, its flowers provide nectar for visiting pollinators. ππ¦
The name yerba santa means "holy herb," reflecting the plant's long history of traditional medicinal use, including by Indigenous peoples of California.
π² Here on Frazier Mountain, I have quite a lot of it growing naturally on my property! I photographed some of those wonderful textured leaves earlier this month. It's another reminder of how much there is to discover without ever leaving home.

Frazier Mountain β’ Grapevine β’ Los Padres National Forest
Good morning from Frazier Mountain! ππ²
Our biggest story remains the approaching Halloween weekend storm. Forecasters are still refining the timing and rainfall amounts, high-wind advisories remain important along Interstate 5, and existing Los Padres National Forest restrictions continue.
Todayβs positive nature story comes from new U.S. Forest Service research on western forest birds and habitat restoration.
π§οΈ 1. Halloween Weekend: Rain Still Expected
@NWSHanford and @NWSLosAngeles continue to monitor a Pacific storm expected to affect California this weekend.
Current forecasts still favor rain developing late Saturday into Sunday, although exact timing and rainfall totals remain uncertain.
For Frazier Mountain, Halloween activities and weekend travel could be affected if the wetter portion of the storm arrives Saturday evening.
This remains a forecast β not a storm warning.
NWS Hanford:

NWS Los Angeles:

π 2. Grapevine / I-5: High-Wind Advisories Continue
@CaltransHQ continues to report high-wind advisories along portions of Interstate 5 through the Grapevine.
Travel is not recommended for campers, trailers, or permit loads in advisory areas.
At the time of the latest highway report, no full closure of I-5 through the Grapevine was listed.

π₯ 3. Los Padres National Forest: Fire Danger Remains Very High
The U.S. Forest Service continues to list Very High fire danger across Los Padres National Forest.
Existing fire-use restrictions remain in effect, including limits on campfires outside designated locations.
Recent rain does not automatically cancel these restrictions.
Current Los Padres alerts and fire restrictions:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π² 4. Mt. Pinos Ranger District: Dry Canyon Closure Continues
The Dry Canyon closure within the Mt. Pinos Ranger District remains in effect.
The closure includes designated areas around:
β’ Dome Springs Road (8N40)
β’ Trails 22W10, 22W11, and 22W13
β’ Dome Springs Campground
This is an existing closure, not a new incident.
Check current Forest Service alerts and closure information before planning backcountry travel:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π¦ 5. Wildlife Science: New Research Could Improve Forest Bird Conservation
A new U.S. Forest Service study examining white-headed woodpeckers found that habitat restoration does not produce the same results everywhere.
Researchers found that local climate conditions can sometimes influence bird population growth more strongly than certain habitat-management actions.
That matters because it can help conservation teams decide where restoration projects are most likely to benefit wildlife.
Itβs another reminder that healthy forests arenβt one-size-fits-all β climate, habitat, and species all interact differently from place to place.
U.S. Forest Service Research:
research.fs.usda.gov/
π‘ Todayβs CaLandBird Takeaway
The approaching Halloween weekend storm remains the main story to watch.
For Frazier Mountain, the priorities over the next few days will be rainfall timing, wind direction, peak gusts, humidity, and any travel impacts along the Grapevine.
Existing Los Padres restrictions remain important, even after recent rain.
And todayβs wildlife research is a good reminder that understanding the land means paying attention to the small differences that shape how animals live and thrive.
Forecasts tell us what could happen. Observations tell us what did happen.

π¦π² A Little Love for the Owl Box on Frazier Mountain!
Yesterday was a beautiful day to get outside, enjoy the mountain air, and tackle a little habitat maintenance.
I headed up the back hill with my branch cutters and weed whacker to clean up around our owl box, which has welcomed visiting owls over the years.
I removed dry, broken branches hanging around the tree and cleared the dry grasses underneath, helping reduce potential fire fuel while keeping the surrounding natural habitat intact.
The mountain is home to so much wildlife, and I love finding ways to care for the land without taking away the shelter and resources these animals depend on.
Of course, what started as a little cleanup turned into a much longer adventure exploring the hillside, enjoying the views, and taking photographs along the way. π
Thereβs something incredibly rewarding about looking back at an area youβve worked on, knowing youβve made a difference, even in a small way.
And the best part? Getting outside, moving, exploring, and enjoying every minute of it. β€οΈ

π‘ FROM OUR WEATHER STATION
One of the things we're discovering is just how quickly our local conditions can change, even over a few minutes.
That's why we're so excited to have our own weather station here at 5,030 feet!
Forecasts tell us what could happen. Observations tell us what did happen.
π² There is always something to discover, if we never stop looking.
Have a beautiful Wednesday, everyone! Stay safe, enjoy the mountain, and keep looking around. There's always something worth discovering! π©·

π² A Little Mountain Update!
Itβs been a busy few days here on Frazier Mountain! π©·
Iβve been spending a lot of time outdoors, tackling projects around the property, exploring the hillside, and enjoying some of the beautiful things nature has to offer along the way.
Iβve got photos, little discoveries, and a few adventures to share with you tomorrow! πΈπΏ
For now, Iβll leave you with this beautiful sunset and a reminder to enjoy the little moments along the way.
One project, one adventure, and one beautiful sunset at a time. π©·
Goodnight from the mountain!
