Not that the 1973 FA Cup winning legend, who cried when he was sold to Manchester City in 1974, wanted anything less than a Sunderland victory to kick off their Europa League campaign last month. The 73-year-old was daft about the Black Cats, where he signed schoolboy forms aged ten, from the moment he could kick a ball outside his house in a tiny County Durham village. But from the moment Frenchman Le Fee’s penalty hit the net Horswill was no longer able to claim the record as the last player to score for the club in Europe. It was 53 years ago this month that he bagged the winner in a 2-1 Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup second round first-leg over Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon at Roker Park before losing the return leg 2-0. Horswill admitted: “I was gutted, so gutted when he scored. I thought that if we draw 0-0 in every game then we can qualify. Someone said to me, ‘What about if they get all own goals?’ I’d never thought of that, I would still have the record. “It was a pride and joy for me for 53 years. I used to tell everybody. But it’s gone now, isn’t it. I’m still really gutted! “[Kevin] Danso nearly scored and he wore No4, same as me, and I thought, ‘Well, that’ll not be so bad, the same number’ but he missed.
