Campaign Legal Center is recommitting to the campaign for democracy we've been leading for nearly a quarter century. Not just for the next year or the next election, but for the long term. That's our commitment. That's our calling. That's our campaign for America.
Campaign Legal Center president @thetrevorpotter spoke with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes about the federal government's unprecedented attempts to unlawfully interfere with the midterm elections and the legal barriers standing in its way. 1/
Trevor Potter, an election lawyer who worked on several Republican presidential campaigns and now runs the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center, explains why some states are pushing back against growing federal actions on elections.
"In all the years I've been involved with elections, it has traditionally been the Republicans who have said, 'We don't want too much federal involvement,'” he says. “That reflects I think fairly the constitutional structure, where the states are in charge of elections."
A top Justice Department official told 60 Minutes that the government’s efforts “sends the message to citizens that the federal government takes the integrity of our elections seriously.”
The president does not run our elections. We have already blocked numerous attempts by the administration to illegally meddle in our elections, and we're prepared to respond to any new attempts to impede on Americans' freedom to vote and have their voices heard. 2/

President Trump has repeatedly said he controls MAGA Inc. and its money.
Here's the problem: That's illegal. Federal law prohibits officeholders from directing this type of money.
We filed a complaint and are calling on the FEC to hold him accountable.

Billions of dollars are flowing into our elections, but we still don’t know the full scope of who’s spending what to influence our vote. That's a problem.
Adav Noti joined @cspanwj to explain how the FEC’s failure to enforce campaign finance rules is leaving voters in the dark.
The federal government's efforts to meddle in the midterm elections have not been successful. Americans can and should vote with confidence this midterm election.
Can President Trump actually do that?
Here's a list of actions the president has taken that he does not, in fact, have the authority to take. And which of these actions have already been blocked by the courts. campaignlegal.org/CanTrumpDo…
We blocked an unconstitutional Trump admin rule that tried to make it harder for nonpartisan groups like the @LWV to register new U.S. citizens to vote.
Now, that work can continue.

You may have heard that the Department of Justice plans to send as many as 1,000 election monitors to the polls this year. Safeguards already exist to protect voters, but Congress can pass laws to strengthen those rules. Here's how: campaignlegal.org/update/eve…

ALT Protect voters, election workers, and our democratic process. DOJ ELECTION MONITORS NEED CLEAR GUARDRAILS Congress should pass legislation that would: Explain who the monitors are, where they’re going, and what they’re allowed to do Reinforce that the role of monitors is to simply observe, not intervene Establish a clear, enforceable standard of conduct CAMPAIGN LEGAL CENTER
Campaign Legal Center is working with state and local officials, along with our partners across the country, to ensure that our elections remain safe, secure, free and fair.
We are stepping in to protect California voters from the Department of Justice's outrageous new lawsuit that threatens to disenfranchise 20k+ voters in Los Angeles. campaignlegal.org/press-rele…
This lawsuit by the DOJ is yet another example of the Trump administration attempting to interfere in our elections to create chaos and confusion.
We're intervening alongside @NAACP and @DDfund_ on behalf of @LULAC, @naacpcahi and @naacplosangeles to ensure all eligible voters in California can cast their ballots in the midterm elections, which is already well underway.

Of the nearly 24 million Americans with past felony convictions, more than 19 million can register to vote right now, but many may not know it. Our new interactive map makes it easier to compare the complicated nationwide patchwork of felony disenfranchisement laws: RestoreYourVote.org

.@CampaignLegal's Adav Noti discusses Federal Election Commission laws on campaign spending and financing:
"Every dollar that comes into federal campaigns is supposed to be disclosed—both where it came from and how it's being spent," says Noti. "The money that goes to campaigns themselves—directly to congressional candidates or Senate candidates—that's fairly transparent," he adds. "The money that goes to super PACs, outside groups, and dark money groups, we really don't know."
States should consider legislation that would codify rules and procedures to protect and safeguard election materials against unlawful interference. Here's four key things every state should do:
