Paying in rupees abroad feels like the safe choice. On a lot of Axis cards it's now the expensive one. Since 28 Aug 2026, Axis charges a 3.5% Dynamic Currency Conversion markup on cards like SELECT, Privilege, MY ZONE and NEO. It used to be 1.5%. DCC is what you pay when an overseas merchant charges you in INR. It happens when a card machine abroad asks "INR or local currency?" and you pick INR, or when a foreign-registered website bills you in rupees. On a ₹1,00,000 hotel bill abroad paid in INR, that's ₹3,500 in markup plus GST, on top of whatever conversion rate the merchant quietly built into the rupee price. Simple rule: abroad, always pick the local currency. On international sites, pay in the site's own currency when it lets you. Your card's normal forex markup still applies, but you skip the DCC charge and the merchant's rate. Markups differ by card, so check your own fee schedule before a trip.
