How many kids back in the day had a massive letdown when opening their candy & realizing the included ⚾️ card said Bob Roth, not Babe Ruth?! 😞🤣 (In fairness to Bob, he was the 1915 AL HR champ w/ 7. 👍)
So grateful the previous owner of this ‘56 Furillo ensured it would fit into one of my standard 9-pocket card sheets.🙄🤣 But these type mods - like handwritten “update cards” - are a big part of the hobby.
Had to get a card of this #Indians LF given his LITANY of “firsts”!
- 1st player to wear a # on jersey. (A 1 pinned to his sleeve in 6/26/1916 game. The idea didn’t “stick” until the Yankees wore #’s in ‘29.)
- 1st batter Babe Ruth faced.
- 1st player to become a broadcaster.
These ‘61 #GoldenPress cards were such a great way for me as a kid to get “old” cards of pre-WWII ⚾️ icons. LOVED the color photos & old school unies. I’ve since gotten “playing era cards” of these guys, but I still have a soft spot for these beauties!❤️
I got my 1st “Willie Mays” card in a 1980 wax pack courtesy of this #Angels DH/1B. #SignatureCards
Sometimes the signature revealed a better name than what was printed on the card. Here’s an example: Bernardo Carbo. #poetry
You want a record that will never be broken? This OF was w/ Salt Lake City of the PCL in 1923 when he set a pro ⚾️ record w/ 325 hits in 1 season!😳 Strand hit .394 in 194 games w/ SLC.🔥
This #Mariners’ pics on ‘79 & ‘80 #Topps could’ve been a solid entry as your Sunday paper’s #SpottheDifference game. How many can you find? 🤔
- Diff color batting glove.
- Wad of tobacco in ‘80.
- Bleacher background in ‘79.
- Label showing on ‘79 bat. 🤣
I have so much respect for this #Cardinals should-be-HOFer for many reasons: his playing career, his personal integrity, his massive impact on the game (at major personal cost)…and now I can add this skill to the list.😳 Would’ve been an incredible man to hang out w/ for a day!
Happy 80th B’day to @Alscoop16!🎉
A career .303 hitter & wonderful follow on X. #Scoop was a 7x All⭐️, a WS champ w/ ‘71 #Pirates, & had a monster 1982 w/ #Expos leading the NL in hits (204), 2Bs (43), BA (.331), RBIs (109) & TBs (317).🔥 As a kid, I loved that he wore #0!😁
Many assume these two Lefebvres were somehow related…not only are they not related, but their last names have two completely different pronunciations:
Jim luh-FEE-ver
Joe luh-FAY

My final nod to @wthballs 1972 “Missing In Action” subset is that Gio - unlike #Topps - gave us all what we wanted w/ an #InAction of Brooks doing what he did best! 🔥 🖼️ #TheHumanVacuumCleaner
A major highlight in #TheHobby during COVID was @wthballs celebrating those who’ve built the beastly ‘72 #Topps set. @delspacefranco & I are proud charter members. BUT…how many have built the “extended ‘72 set” w/ Gio’s 25 INCREDIBLE missing “In Action” cards?!😜 #FineArt 🖼️

And just in case @delspacefranco & others are still on the fence wrt this ‘72 “subset”, consider this: The cards (printed on legit card stock) assemble to create the following player images on their backs.🤯 Sirs, @wthballs does not overlook ANY details! 🔥😍
And, speaking of details, of course the set comes in a replica ‘72 #Topps wax pack wrapper. 🔥 #NoStoneUnturned
Incredible cameo bonuses of #TheGreatOne & #CharlieHustle. Bill Freehan shown w/ his best battery mate Mickey Lolich. 🔥
No vintage cards of Ed Head, so I got this ‘42 AP Wire photo. Why? The #Dodgers LHP prospect had an accident that almost cost him his left arm. So he re-taught himself to pitch righty. Made WWII depleted club. Then in his 1st start of ‘46 (full strength MLB) Ed threw a no-no!🔥
All is good for me post #Isaias. 🙏🏻 Praying for those who took the brunt of it as we were fortunate to be on the west side & only lose power for several hours - no damage, just a lot of cleanup to do…and I get to restock my wall display w/ a new TBD theme. 🤔
Living on the Gulf coast, a periodic activity is taking down my cards in my framed case, all my boxes & binders of best cards to put in my car’s trunk in my garage as a hurricane approaches. So here we go thanks to #Isaias. Wedding pics? At risk. ‘55 Topps set? Safe & secured!😉
