Discrimination based on race has been a hallmark of progressives from the very beginning. A century ago, it was Woodrow Wilson segregating federal offices and progressives championing eugenics in the name of “science.” Mid-century, it was urban renewal that bulldozed minority neighborhoods while claiming to lift them up. And today, it’s the same story dressed up as “equity”—government programs that once again sort and divide people by skin color. The labels have changed, but the habit hasn’t: progressives keep returning to the idea that government should pick winners and losers based on race.
