What makes it Scotch #Whisky? By law it has to be matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years. Before that, it is new make spirit. Same liquid, same cask, just not whisky yet. So the clock starts the day the cask is filled.

Scotch #Whisky regions are a starting point, not a rule. Five are protected by law: Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. Islay is known for peat, yet Bunnahabhain is mostly unpeated. Highland covers light to smoky. The distillery and cask tell you more.

Why does so much Scotch #Whisky mature in American oak? Bourbon has to be aged in new charred oak containers, so a barrel can only hold bourbon once. Many of those barrels then cross the Atlantic. Ex-bourbon casks are the most common casks in Scotland's warehouses.

Fractional does not mean vague. In #AltAssets built on physical objects, a fractional unit should point to one named cask: distillery, fill date and warehouse, out of a fixed total. If a unit cannot be traced to one cask, #Tokenization has not made anything clearer.

Where does the smoke in #Whisky come from? Peat, burned to dry malted barley in the kiln. The smoke leaves compounds called phenols on the grain, measured in ppm. Much of that is lost in distilling and maturing, so the barley's ppm is not what reaches the glass.

What can a public ledger show you? On @hedera: which fractional units exist for a cask, which account holds each, and every transfer. It can't show the whisky. That's the warehouse's job. #RWA needs the #blockchain record and custody. How to check: caskcapital.io/blog/how-to-v…

Two starting points for #Rum. Most rum is made from molasses, a by-product of sugar making. Rhum agricole is made from fresh sugarcane juice instead. It is tied to the French Caribbean, and Martinique has its own AOC for it. Same plant, very different spirit.

Sherry casks are not all alike. Oloroso is dry and nutty. Pedro Ximénez (PX) is dark and intensely sweet. Each leaves a different mark on #Whisky. Most sherry casks in Scotland are seasoned: filled with sherry for a while to prepare the wood, then emptied for whisky.

Many of the best known #Whisky releases never carry the distillery's own label. Independent bottlers buy casks from distilleries, mature or select them, and bottle under their own name. It is a big reason single casks from quieter distilleries ever reach a glass.

Pot still or column still? It shapes a #Rum before any cask does. Pot stills run in batches and tend to keep more heavy, flavourful character. Column stills run continuously and can make a lighter spirit. Plenty of rums blend the two.

Aultmore 2024, a Speyside #Whisky in a refill bourbon hogshead. 63.6% ABV. Held in bond in Scotland. Fractional units in USDC or by card. Refill wood tends to let the distillery's own character lead. app.caskcapital.io/asset/215…

How is a #Whisky age counted? Only the years in the cask count. The clock stops when it is bottled, so a 12 year old bottle stays 12 on your shelf. And when casks are blended, the age on the label has to be that of the youngest whisky in it.

The word that matters in #RWA is "real." A token is only as real as the thing it points to: a named object, in a named place, held by a named custodian. For a cask that means a cask number, a bonded warehouse and a record you can trace. That is #Tokenization worth having.

Two kinds of #Whisky warehouse you will hear about. Dunnage: low, stone walled, earth floor, casks stacked a few high. Cool and damp. Racked: taller buildings with casks on metal racks, many rows high. Same spirit, different air around the cask over the years.

Not all casks are the same size, and size changes the whisky. A barrel holds about 200 litres. A hogshead about 250. A butt about 500. Smaller casks put more spirit in contact with oak, so #Whisky in a barrel tends to pick up wood character faster than in a butt.

Cask strength means the #Whisky is bottled at the strength it comes out of the cask, without being reduced with water first. Most Scotch is cut to somewhere between 40% and 46% ABV before bottling. At cask strength, the water is your call, not the bottler's.

#Rum ages differently in the tropics. Heat speeds up the exchange between spirit and oak, and far more liquid evaporates each year than in a Scottish warehouse. So ten years in the Caribbean and ten years in Scotland are not a like-for-like comparison.

Staiosha, the peated spirit from Bunnahabhain on #Islay, filled 16 Jan 2025 into an ex-Laphroaig quarter cask. 69.3% ABV. Held in bond in Scotland. Fractional units in USDC or by card. app.caskcapital.io/asset/276…

Regauging is a cask's health check. The warehouse measures how much liquid is left and at what strength, then works out the remaining litres of pure alcohol. Fill records tell you where a #Whisky cask started. A recent regauge tells you where it is now.

#Tokenization does not make a cask mature any faster. The oak, the warehouse and the years do that. What changes is the record: who owns which unit, on @hedera and checkable on HashScan. How to check it yourself: caskcapital.io/blog/how-to-v…
