As more crypto projects shut down, I want to re-emphasize the approach Net is taking Net Protocol is a free public good and most of the site is free to use I've been working on this protocol + site for over 2 years, and the reason I've been able to sustain operations this long is because of our unit economics The unit economics consist of - Run the Net site as efficiently to keep most core functionality free - No persistent infra: no database, indexer, or always-on servers - Limited misc expenses (ex. no paid KOLs, no paid exchange listings, etc) - Only one dev (me) - Revenue primarily from $ALPHA swap fees Through our unit economics and this model, we’ve built and continue to build many capabilities: - Net Protocol core - Storage + Net CDN - Profiles, Botchan, chat, and feeds - Tokens + upvotes - Net CLI, skills, and open-source code - Net bazaar - New: Hosted on Net Both the core protocol and the majority of these capabilities are free to use. For example, you can trade NFTs or ERC20s on the Net bazaar with 0 fees, or upload + access content from the Net CDN at no cost (outside of gas). The Net project is run like an ultra-lean small business. Over the course of Net’s lifetime, we’ve seen periods of high activity and low activity as we explore different concepts. We have lots of ideas but they all hinge on one requirement: survival. I’ve intentionally avoided anything that can get in the way of that goal. I created Net Protocol because I believed there should be a fully onchain messaging protocol (indexed data layer) that was free to use, permanent, censorship-resistant, and not compromised by BS “tokenomics” incentives Through that protocol, Net has seen thousands of users, millions of dollars moved, and nonstop innovation My belief continues to be that if Net gets much more popular, $ALPHA will rise too as the community memecoin of the Net ecosystem, and that these unit economics will prevail (reminder - the core Net Protocol is 100% free to use, that’s why there’s no “utility” coin) There’s certainly risks to this model. Maybe I’m wrong about the above belief. Or maybe the dry up in Base liquidity across all tokens continues and doesn’t return. Or maybe hosting providers all get more expensive. Many factors could go wrong.
