1-A Bell-430 helicopter crashed in Marondera on Wednesday,September 30, 2026 claiming the lives of all five aboard; Businessman Wicknell M. Chivayo his beloved wife Lucy, her personal aide Senelisiwe Magagula and the helicopter crew, Captain Kelvin T. Soda and Co-Pilot Courage Mutavirwa. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the aviation/military community.
2-This particular Zimbabwe Registered Bell-430 (Reg: Z-PED) was a twin-engine medium executive utility helicopter with a white and navy blue colour scheme was manufactured in 2004 ( about 22 years old) by the Texas headquartered American Aerospace Manufacturer Bell Textron (formerly Bell Helicopter). It was one of the only 136 Bell-430s built between 1996-2008.
This helicopter passed through the hands of five (American/Canadian/South African) owners before Wicknell Chivayo acquired it in 2024 for about US$1,3mln
3-In April 2024 Emperor Aviation (South Africa) imported the Bell-430 helicopter and registered it on the South African civil register as ZT-RNX , still wearing its original Canadian red-and-white paint scheme.
Wicknell Chivayo then acquired the helicopter from Emperor Aviation registering and operating it in Zimbabwe for some time as Z-EDP, still retaining its distinct red-and-white paint scheme.
4-In early August 2026 Wicknell Chivhayo sent the helicopter back to South Africa for custom executive paint work—getting transformed from its white and red colour scheme, into the navy blue-and-white colour—and its Zimbabwean registration tail number was formally swapped from Z-EDP to Z-PED, and the colour change was completed in August 2026.
5-This is the white and navy blue Bell-430 helicopter in which Sir Wicknell, Lucy, Senelisiwe, Kelvin and Courage perished at Kudenga Farm as it flew from Gandami,Chikomba to Harare.

Welcome home our Air Warriors!
The Air force of Zimbabwe aerobatics contingent comprising of two K-8 Karakorums and a Casa -212 got back home and safely touched down at their respective home bases on Tuesday July 22, 2026 after a sterling performance at the Africa Defence & Aerospace 2026 expo which ran from 16 to 20 September 2026 at Air force Base Waterkloof in the City of Thswane, South Africa.
Air Force of Zimbabwe pilots flew the small agile aircraft with strict discipline and performed gravity defying manoeuvres with exact precision. We had two other aircraft on static display: another K-8 and a Casa-212. I doff my hat for our aircraft technicians for being making this AAD-2026 mission a success.

Some background information on Eagles of Civilisation
Replying to @airpower33
1/ History of the Exercise
Eagles of Civilization launched in 2025 as the first-ever China-Egypt joint air force training.
Last year (April–May 2025) China sent J-10Cs, KJ-500 early-warning aircraft, YY-20 tankers, and Z-20 helicopters. Egypt flew MiG-29s. They practiced air superiority, SEAD, search-and-rescue, and even low-level flyovers of the Pyramids.
It was Beijing’s first systematic air force deployment to Africa. The message was clear: China is no longer just an arms seller — it’s building real operational partnerships in the heart of the Middle East-Africa gateway.
This year’s upgrade to J-16s shows the relationship is accelerating fast.
THE COMMANDER WHO STOOD WITH KARIBA:
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Muchechesi and the Leadership Behind the 'Mbuya Nehanda' Recovery Mission
By John Tafadzwa Chirinda
In the darkest moments of the Mbuyanehanda boat disaster, Kariba needed more than boats, divers and equipment.
It needed leadership.
It needed someone who could look a grieving community in the eye and say: “We will not leave anyone behind.”
That responsibility fell, among others, on Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Muchechesi, Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army's Boat Regiment and the officer who headed the Joint Operations Command (JOC) in Kariba during the recovery mission.
His leadership throughout the operation deserves to be remembered—not simply as a military success, but as an extraordinary demonstration of service, accountability and humanity.
A commander who made a promise
From the earliest stages of the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Muchechesi understood that the community needed more than official statements.
People needed reassurance. Families needed answers. The media needed information. And the soldiers under his command needed direction. He therefore made himself available.
He engaged the community.
He listened. He spoke to the media.
He allowed difficult questions to be asked.
And, importantly, he responded.
At a time when emotions were running high, and uncertainty was everywhere, his openness became a source of confidence.
He assured the community that under his command, the operation would leave no effort unmade in accounting for those who had been lost.
His words were tested by circumstances—and his team lived up to them.
A career built around the water
There is something particularly significant about Lieutenant Colonel Muchechesi's connection with the Boat Regiment.
His story is intertwined with the evolution of the very unit he now commands.
He previously served as a Captain when the unit was still known as the Boat Squadron.
When the formation was upgraded to a Boat Regiment, he returned to it as a Major.
He subsequently rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, eventually becoming the commander of the Regiment.
That progression speaks to experience, institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of the specialist work required on Zimbabwe's major inland waters.
He was not an outsider arriving to direct an unfamiliar operation.
He understood the boats.
He understood the divers.
He understood the water.
And he understood the men and women entrusted with the mission.
Leadership beyond the military camp
Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of Lieutenant Colonel Muchechesi's leadership during the disaster was his willingness to step beyond the traditional boundaries of military command.
He opened the doors to the community.
He opened the doors to the media.
He allowed journalists to ask questions—difficult questions, uncomfortable questions and questions arising from genuine public concern.
That openness mattered.
In a disaster of this magnitude, communication is itself part of the rescue effort.
Families waiting for information need to know what is happening.
The public needs confidence that the operation is being properly coordinated.
And the media needs access to reliable information so that communities are not left to depend on rumours.
Lieutenant Colonel Muchechesi understood this.
He did not hide behind his rank.
He used his position to communicate.
The mission that tested everyone
The recovery operation on Lake Kariba was not an ordinary assignment.
The lake presented a hostile environment.
Waves, cold temperatures, difficult underwater visibility and submerged terrain created extraordinary challenges for the divers and boat crews.
