I always thought this was a fallacy: women have to follow male protagonists, so why is it so difficult for a man to follow a female protagonist? No, I’m not asking you to read a romance novel or follow in the steps of Bella from Twilight or Feyre from ACOTAR—but surely there were men who could see themselves in hardened heroines like Katniss from The Hunger Games and Tris from Divergent. And young male readers always have Harry Potter and Percy Jackson too. There ARE books out there: you just have to be willing to look (or branch out to comics/graphic novels/manga too—I know many boys grew up with Goku, Luffy, Naruto, and Ichigo to name a few from manga!).
Maybe you can shut the f up about what boys want to read and what they don't want to read .

Look to the culture. Do powerful, wealthy men display respect for learning, or is male culture dominated by podcasts, gym, gaming, gambling, hyper sexual pursuit of ass, grievance posturing, and jockeying for dominance in tech ? The young emulate what they see older men doing, in order to maintain or develop peer respect and find a place in the hierarchy.
If men, as a category, displayed the reverence for literature that previous generations did, you’d have more young male readers, you’d have men chasing publishing jobs, you’d have more books.
