Martin Hägglunds *This Life* claims to give the left a rigorous atheism. What it instead gives is a credentialed-professional's relationship to mortality dressed up as the transcendental structure of care—with the proletariat quietly erased in the process julesnotes.substack.com/p/an…

During the Cultural Revolution, these were some of the rules the middle schooler Red Guards were instituting. They'd set up street checkpoints to impose "revolutionary haircuts" and proletarian dress code

Here is a thread where I articulate my thoughts about the most recent work of Carlos Eire in case you’re curious. Let me also just say that his position on the crisis facing the academy did not surprise me at all given what I know about his work and his biography.
I’m quite fascinated by how popular it has been outside the discipline of medieval and religious studies, and how lukewarm to tepid the religious studies and medievalist response has been (outside of Catholic intellectual circles, at least).

the American megachurch is the result of applying modern corporate growth strategy to the evangelical church. it’s an unholy fusion of capitalism and authoritarian, high-demand spiritual community. you cannot apply its “best practices” to the DSA without letting in its spirit
82% of megachurch attendees join by personal invite, vs 21% of DSA members, who mostly self-select online We have a lot to learn on how to develop members into organizers

I'd hope that a labor historian would be more attentive to the concrete processes and structures through which churches and leftwing orgs have historically constituted themselves and why they may not translate. OP's position is almost as cynical as it is opportunistic
Actually, megachurches have a far deeper base in the broader working-class than the Left, which is one reason why we should try to learn from how they organize

Incredibly cynical on a number of levels, but I do find very funny Blanc's implication that the social base of DSA and your average megachurch is so similar (middle-class) that you can translate organizational methods without losing anything of substance

Anyways, I don't think left orgs should replicate the methods through which churches develop for the straightforward reason that left orgs and churches do very different things for distinct social bases that in turn inform their organizational structures. Not v helpful

Big T. knew it. Christian “socialist” discourse is just a therapeutic community that years later confirms his criticism of its idols. A place to find comfort in something stable, an assured “salvation” that transforms the living God into a guarantor of our existential security
“Supra-class morality inevitably leads to the acknowledgment of a special substance, of a ‘moral sense’, ‘conscience’, some kind of absolute which is nothing more than the philosophic-cowardly pseudonym for a god. Independent of ‘ends’, that is, of society, morality, whether we +

Plemons’ role in Digger is misunderstood: Kenny is bankrolling the play for his own catharsis and absolution as much as for the benefit of the audience.

After years of being an asoiaf fan I finally relented and began listening to the preston jacobs TWOW fan chapters. So far I don't get why they're so controversial in the community, I'm having a great time. They're great for commutes too
