Almighty Father,
you have brought us to the light of a new day:
keep us safe the whole day through
from every sinful inclination.
May all our thoughts, words and actions
aim at doing what is pleasing in your sight.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
β Amen.

Jeremiah 15:16
When I found your words, I devoured them;
they became my joy and the happiness of my heart,
Because I bore your name,
O Lord, God of hosts.
God, + come to my assistance.
β Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
β as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Abused women donβt always stop being feminine because they no longer care about themselves.
Sometimes, they stop dressing up because theyβve spent so long being criticized, controlled, belittled, or made to feel that their appearance doesnβt matter.
Little by little, she stops buying pretty clothes. She stops doing her hair. She stops wearing makeup. She stops looking in the mirror and seeing the woman she used to be.
Not because she disappeared, but because she was surviving.
Abuse can make a woman shrink herself just to make it through the day.
And then one day, she begins to heal.
Be patient with us. It comes back very slowly. Sometimes it takes years to get over being invisible.
One day...
She puts on the dress.
She fixes her hair.
She wears the perfume.
She looks in the mirror again.
And she realizes:
She was never gone. She was just buried beneath years of survival.
There is something incredibly powerful about a woman rediscovering her femininityβnot for a man, not for attention, but because she finally feels free enough to be herself again. β€οΈ #Healing #Abuse

Friends, the modern conception of the self is built on autonomous choice: βThis is my life; these are my choices; donβt tell me what to do.β
Thatβs legitimateβup to a point.
In Catholic thought, the self isnβt the sheerly autonomous, self-reliant individual of modernity. There is also the reality of participation: βIβm me, but I belong to something bigger than myself: a family, a community, a faith.β
Paul Tillich spoke of a polarity between individualization and participation. These two poles of the self should live in a creative, healthy tension.
But weβve lost sight of the second, and itβs the side we need more of today.
