Nearly eight months after Pope Leo XIV appointed him apostolic nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia visited Baltimore Oct. 25, offering a reminder of the Holy See’s close ties to the nation’s oldest Catholic see. Celebrating morning Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Vatican diplomat urged Catholics to bear witness to their faith not only through words but through acts of love and service, especially toward those who are vulnerable, lonely or in need. catholicreview.org/papal-nun… #LocalNews

During a Gaudium et Spes 22 podcast on the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas this past June, I said to my friend Larry Chapp, perhaps more flippantly than the subject warranted, that the folks leading the AI revolution “don’t know the difference between metaphysics and Metamucil.” That is, they seem oblivious to the truth that there are deep truths inscribed into the human condition: truths that we can know by reason (and, Christians would insist, by revelation); truths that disclose the pathways to personal flourishing and social solidarity. catholicreview.org/ai-and-ev… #AI #Commentary #Blog #FaithBlog

A number of scenes in the passable chiller #OtherMommy feature a secluded seaside mansion, a lighthouse and some cliffs. As such traditional visuals suggest, the film is mostly an old-fashioned frightfest, though it does include a single, very bloody sequence as well as vocabulary that marks it as strictly for grown-ups. @OSVNews classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is R catholicreview.org/movie-rev… #MovieReview #Film

It would have been fun to witness, but we weren’t too disappointed. Seeing the cloud from a rocket launch all the way in Maryland would have been a bonus, but we will see something else special in the sky another day. It just didn’t happen for us today. catholicreview.org/what-we-s… #Blog #FaithBlog #commentary @OpenWindow_CR

Haitian Catholics in Philadelphia are marking a half century of faith and fellowship, amid Trump administration crackdowns on immigration, uncertainty about current deportation protections and ongoing gang violence in Haiti. “It’s 50 years of determination, 50 years of challenge, 50 years of faith,” said Father Eugène Almonor, an Oblate of Mary Immaculate and chaplain of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Haitian Catholic Community. Father Almonor spoke with OSV News ahead of an Oct. 17 Mass honoring the community’s golden anniversary at St. William Parish in Northeast Philadelphia, home to one of two “branches” — north and west — of the archdiocese’s Haitian Catholics. catholicreview.org/haitian-c… #Immigration #WorldNews

In her talk at Catholic Charities of Baltimore’s annual social justice symposium, Sister Norma said she was there, standing before all of them at the Timonium gathering, because she said “yes.” “I went ahead and said yes to God … to change me into helping me discover who I am and who he wanted me to be,” Sister Norma said in her talk, “From Stranger to Neighbor: An Immigration Call to Action.” catholicreview.org/giving-im… #Immigration #LocalNews

With Pope Leo’s recent diagnosis and extra prayers for the Holy Father added to every parish’s Prayers of the Faithful, conversations on cancer have taken center stage. Adults might be wondering how to share such news with children, whether kids have heard prayers for the pope or a family member is facing a difficult diagnosis. catholicreview.org/how-to-ta… #Commentary #Blog #FaithBlog

A historic Spanish-mission style home sits on 25th Street in North Arlington not far from Marymount University. In 1907, Frank Lyon had it built as his family home. The lawyer, newspaper publisher and real estate developer had seen the Spanish missions in California and wanted to recreate that stucco style here. It was the first home in the county to have electricity because Lyon figured out how to tap into the electricity powering the trolley line on nearby Old Dominion Drive. Ironically, four decades later, that mission-style home became a literal home for missionaries. catholicreview.org/a-mission… #WorldNews #LocalNews

#France’s #bishops condemned “unacceptable violence” that “gripped” the country over the Oct. 17-18 weekend, saying the scenes of rioting “plunged the country into shock, fear, and despair, raising numerous questions about the root causes of this crisis,” the bishops wrote in their Oct. 19 statement. catholicreview.org/french-bi… #WorldNews

Presence has enormous power. Power to make someone feel human. Power to bear witness. Power to bring God’s warm love into a cold courthouse. In the Diocese of #SanDiego, a ministry that accompanies #immigrants in the country without documents to their hearings and check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, at the downtown federal courthouse marked its first year in August. catholicreview.org/ministry-… #Immigration #WorldNews
