I’d posit this is because big publishers strangled the life out of ebooks. They charged more didn’t bundle them with paper purchases and limited lending from libraries etc.
"bookselling was in a panic about the Kindle...Today, the e-reader market has plateaued at some 10% of traditional publishers’ revenue, while about 75% comes from paper books, a technology essentially unchanged since the nineteenth century" newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

The PBS documentary on Jonestown is genuinely amazing but there’s this great bit about Jim Jones’s career as a door to door pet monkey salesman where they talk to this woman and she’s like Oh yeah I remember Jim Jones. Bought a monkey from him. Anyways the monkey hanged itself.

"Desert Monument," by American artist and Disney illustrator, Eyvid Earle, 1993.
Just as Nightmare on Elm Street 3 feels a bit like an ultraviolent Saturday morning cartoon - and it works, it's not in a bad way - Freddy vs. Jason feels like an ultraviolent season of Stranger Things, except set in an alternate universe in which teenagers drink and fuck
Freddy vs. Jason feels like a Spaghetti Western, with its large cast of characters with their own alliances and motives, a bad man in a hat, and overall with how it's a film by an idiosyncratic, not-American director adding his own cool, non-cynical spin to American folklore

Crime Wave (1985) by John Paizs is a movie you should watch if you love the theatrical artificiality of Digger, The Devils, Roy Andersson, and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City
The people who made and promulgated this PSA have made the error of assuming that those in the top ~2% of neuroticism are wiser or more observant than everybody else. You can just tell them "no" when they ask you to do this kind of campaign. It's a weird PSA, for a...niche issue
