Most people misunderstand competition entirely.
They think it’s about obsessing over the outcome, hyping yourself up in the mirror, or grinding until you burn out. But if you actually study top-tier athletes and elite performers, the reality looks completely different.
5 mindset shifts from a lifetime of competing and coaching high-level athletes:
1. Don’t worry about being the best. Be the best at getting better.
Winning is a byproduct. The greats don’t get lost chasing shiny objects or external validation—they get obsessed with the process because it’s the only thing they can actually control: their effort, attitude, and response.
2. Confidence demands receipts.
You can’t fake real self-trust. Pep talks and hype music only go so far. Confidence doesn't come from positive thoughts; it comes from evidence. Reps remove doubt. Show up and stack proof that you can handle whatever gets thrown at you.
3. Reframe anxiety as excitement.
Anxiety and excitement are almost identical physiological responses—both are high-arousal states. Don't waste energy trying to forcedly "calm down" right before a big moment. Shift the direction instead of the intensity: your body isn't panicking, it's priming you to step up.
4. Joy and fun are performance enhancers.
We constantly mistake being hyper-serious for being dedicated. The highest level of performance happens at the exact intersection of intensity and play. If you strip away the fun, your output eventually plummets.
5. Learn how to lose well.
Failure isn't a permanent mark on your character—it's just feedback. Modern culture makes every setback feel public and devastating. The faster you drop the emotional reaction, analyze what happened, and iterate, the faster you get back to building.
Dominate what’s in your control and keep going.

I came to Edwardsville, @SIUEBaseball and ran a 6.54 in the 60, threw 91 from the outfield, and hit a 447-foot BP shot to Missouri 106 exit velocity off the bat. Stacking days. Building strength. #RollCougs #ThePowerofX
Anxious athletes focus on what could go wrong; elite athletes focus on what specific step needs to happen next to make things go right.
Training your mental game doesn't replace physical repetition—it simply ensures that your physical skills show up when you need them most.
