Israel goes to the polls on 27 October. Is this the most consequential election in the country’s history?
@DrJulieNorman2, @YMekelberg and @KseniaSvetlova (@CH_MENAP), discuss what is at stake for Israel and the Middle East.
▪️Is the election a referendum on Benjamin Netanyahu’s long tenure in power?
▪️Is the war with Iran on the ballot?
▪️Is Israeli policy towards Gaza and settler violence in the West Bank a key consideration?

The rest of Europe could learn from Baltic states' whole-of-society model, which seeks to prepare populations from Finland to Lithuania for an era of high-threat risk.

The UK should make future trade agreements with Israel conditional on halting settlement expansion in the West Bank, reining in settler violence, releasing tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority — and engaging with the US-led Board of Peace to agree on a withdrawal plan from Gaza.

President Donald Trump may dismiss the threat posed by climate change, but its consequences are becoming harder to ignore — just ask voters in Arizona. chathamhouse.org/2026/10/wat…
After his 2006 midterm defeat, George W Bush defied the mandate voters had given by escalating the Iraq War. Donald Trump may yet repeat history — and escalate with Iran post-November.

A decade after Saudi Arabia's intervention in Yemen, the Houthis are entrenched and emboldened, while Yemen's government is fragmented. A return to full-scale war seems imminent.

"Yemen remains one of the least understood countries in the region. When the war broke out in 2015, there were only a handful of international journalists in Sana'a.
Between 2001 and 2008, the international conversation was about what Yemen meant to Al-Qaeda. Then it became about Yemen and Iran, and then Yemen and Saudi Arabia – but never a conversation about Yemen itself."
@almuslimi (@CH_MENAP) discusses his experience covering Yemen and the Houthis as an analyst during the Arab Spring. Read the full interview in the autumn issue of @TheWorldToday, the international affairs magazine of @ChathamHouse.

The UK's ban on trade with Israeli settlements, announced in September 2026, is grounded in international law, and has the stated aim of upholding the international commitment to a two-state solution.
Chatham House's latest policy paper sets out targeted steps that the UK, with like-minded partners, can take to safeguard the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel.

Donald Trump would not be the first president to double down once unshackled from midterm elections. The ‘lame duck’ phase of Trump’s presidency may yet prove even more disruptive for international affairs.

"There was constant speculation [by Cubans], but very little reliable information. Most people don’t have a clear idea of what will happen next.
At the same time, Cubans remain deeply proud of their country. Even amid such hardship, the sense of national identity is very strong."

In early October 2026, Haiti announced the postponement of campaigning for presidential and parliamentary elections expected on 13 December — with no new election dates confirmed.
@ChrisSabatini argues in our latest policy paper that elections held too soon – and under current security conditions – could add further to the instability in Haiti.

South Africa has been in the grip of anti-immigrant protests and violence over its winter months, leading to the deaths of four foreign nationals - two Mozambicans, an Ethiopian and a Malawian. Tens of thousands more have been left in fear of their lives and livelihoods.
Many have queued outside diplomatic missions in Johannesburg and Cape Town, seeking to escape from a nation that once styled itself a beacon of continental solidarity. This is not the first time South Africa has experienced xenophobic violence. What distinguishes this outbreak though is not just its unprecedented scale, but the widening demographic of protesters and the extent to which the violence has become politically organized.

Having turned the Strait of Hormuz into a symbol of resistance against the United States, Iran is unlikely to restore Hormuz to the pre-war status quo that existed on 28 February.
Tehran's greatest challenge now will be to avoid overreach when negotiating an arrangement over Hormuz acceptable to the Gulf states and the international community. Such a balancing act is essential, as Gulf monarchies are investing in pipelines to the Red Sea to reduce their dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.

Russia's business and financial elites are being squeezed between two sides. International sanctions have cut off the exit once available to the country’s wealthiest, while at home Vladimir Putin has grown more willing to nationalize what remains of the Russian economy.
Russia’s business leaders now find themselves at the mercy of an increasingly interventionist Russian state, with few effective levers to influence the terms of the relationship with the Kremlin.
