In this week's #Parallax, I argue that IISc should be Isro’s #JPL! India’s space ambitions need a stronger bridge between fundamental research & space missions. @isro & @iiscbangalore already have the foundations. India now needs to build on them.

At work, “final” is a moving target, “soon” is a state of mind, and “yes” may mean “I heard you”. Long before #GenZ redefined emojis, we've all encountered the word-bending OGs.

Told you so! ITBP DG Shatrujeet Singh Kapur confirms several face-offs between Chinese & Indian troops in Arunachal, including Taksing, which are still continuing. The face-offs were even taking place when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Delhi for BRICS. #IndiaChinaBorderRow

In this week's #Parallax: India must change its slogan to #MadeBYIndia from #MadeINIndia, lest it wants to become a nation that manufactures the future without owning it. It must learn to look at milestones like a marathon runner, not a PR agency!

@IIABengaluru researchers combined observations from the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) on Aditya-L1 & #ASPIICS coronagraph aboard Proba-3 to study two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) recorded on Sept 14 and 16, 2025. 2/n

The study, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, measured the eruptions’ mass, density and energy, providing new constraints on the physical processes that shape them in the Sun's inner corona. 3/n

#CMEs are large eruptions in which the Sun ejects vast quantities of magnetised plasma into space. When directed towards Earth, they can disturb its space environment and affect satellites and other space-based systems… 4/n

…Understanding their early evolution is crucial to improving our knowledge of these events and their potential consequences. Observing CMEs close to Sun has remained challenging. 5/n

Earlier space-based coronagraphs couldn’t fully track early evolution of faint eruptions, leaving scientists with limited info on how their energy is divided between motion, heat and magnetic fields. 6/n

The two missions offer complementary capabilities. VELC uses spectroscopy to study the solar corona, including the temp & density of its gas. ASPIICS captures images of corona using visible light and a green emission line. 7/n

Combining these observations allows scientists to cross-check estimates of CME properties using different methods. As per Isro, the two instruments share a common field of view in the low corona. 8/n

Between July and Dec 2025, however, only two CMEs, those of Sept 14 and 16, were recorded simultaneously by both. In each case, VELC caught the eruption at an early stage, showing how the two instruments complement each other. 9/n

Researchers found that the Sept 14 CME travelled at about 645 km per second, while the Sept 16 eruption moved at a much slower 145 km per second. The density of the slower CME declined more sharply with height, indicating stronger early expansion. 10/n

The study also found differences in how the eruptions distributed their energy. In the Sept 14 CME, thermal energy accounted for about 1% of the total energy. 11/n

In the Sept 16 event, thermal energy increased until it was comparable to kinetic energy. The estimated magnetic energy was comparable to or greater than the kinetic energy. 12/n
