This Day in TSR History, November 8, 1976 50 years ago today, a letter was postmarked that would help launch one of TSRโ€™s most memorable games outside of Dungeons & Dragons. The recipient was a young Merle Rasmussen, who had been developing an espionage role playing game with his friends while attending college. The sender? Mike Carr, Vice President of Production at TSR Hobbies, who wanted to review Merleโ€™s game idea. That little letter, postmarked November 8, 1976, helped set in motion what would eventually become TOP SECRET, TSRโ€™s classic 1980 espionage rpg. And hereโ€™s the really cool part. We know the exact date because Merle himself told the story in The Dragon #38, published in June 1980, in an article called โ€œThe Rasmussen Files.โ€ Nearly half a century later, I had the pleasure of meeting Merle in person. Thatโ€™s the two of us in the photo. From a college studentโ€™s homemade spy game to one of TSRโ€™s classic role playing titles. All because somebody at TSR was willing to take a look at an idea. Happy 50th anniversary to that little piece of RPG history. Who remembers playing TOP SECRET back in the day?

Posting this because it explains more about the recent election than you will get from pundits left or right.

A co-worker called me the Criss Angel of data analysis. I don't know exactly what they meant, but I think it was a complement. Mind-Freak...

One of my group's favorite moments in our 3.x campaign was when they decided to take a shortcut through the wilderness to the next city. The journey was about 21 days and they had 7 days of rations. They were making hunting checks (and failing often) and arrived at the location of the next challenge nearly dead from starvation. They loved it. It was frustrating in the moment, but when push came to shove it made for a better experience in the long term.
Seems Legit Also, the words: Outdoor Survival. D&D has changed.

Don't trust the polls(?) New from me: I tried to sign the bias on historical Senate polling misses. First, we can see while polling has favored both parties, it consistently overestimated Democrats this decade. Not news for Dems battling 2020 PTSD. But this hides a pattern: (1/n)

When my students ask how I vote. I tell them that I follow a spatial ideological model and vote for the candidates closest to me in ideological space. Then I begin discussing Hotellingโ€™s 1929 linear spacing model and Downsโ€™ 1957 Economic Theory of Democracy. After this, I show them clips of Eddie Murphy in The Distinguished Gentleman.

Halloween III is one of my favorite horror films. Highly underrated.
I have the distinct pleasure to sit with my director of photography on Halloween night watching Halloween III. This is a fun moment.

This is the best of America. Community and connection. Happy Halloween!
BREAKING: Massive turnout at Pav IV for Trick-or-Treating on the @UVA Lawn! No exit polls, no precinct reports, no recounts. Just thousands of happy little monsters and goblins exercising their constitutional right to free candy.

Each of the first three Kal-Arath zines all started out as ink drawings, sketches, and longhand notes in an art book. They were a lot of fun to make. I hope to get the time to finish the editing process of turning them into one coherent whole with new artwork.

First Harry Kane withs the Ballon D'Or, now this returns to TV? We are back in the proper timeline.
โ€˜Mickeyโ€™s Christmas Carolโ€™ will air on ABC for the first time since 2003 on November 25th.

Very cool tool that will make election night a little less stressful for many and that adds information rather than mystery to the process.
Interested in learning more about why we see "blue shifts" and "red shifts" in post-election voting returns? Give our simulation a spin, it's based on published research with @yimenglipolisci and synthetic data. rmichaelalvarez.github.io/blโ€ฆ

It's also true that @RackSpinner is a reminder that people bought more comics when they bought them to read instead of collecting them.
I love @RackSpinner. My budget was limited as a kid so I never have a full bingo card. There's always a wild card in there that has me 3 out of the 4, but I check it every day.

It never ceases to amaze me how much pure entertainment @Dean_Devlin has provided the world. I don't think he gets discussed enough. From Stargate and Independence Day to The Librarian(s) and Leverage, not to mention Universal Soldier and Almost Paradise, he's one of the Kings of Popcorn Fun. Oh, and he was Milton in the film Real Genius. Thanks Dean for all the entertainment!
Wow, 32 years since Stargate hit theaters! @rolandemmerich and I had no idea how far that ring would take us. To the incredible community that keeps the gate open every single day, thank you.

We already received the perfect modern reimagining of The Birds. It was called Birdemic and it is a thing of beauty.
