Don’t listen to this. Do not think of pink elephants either. *Definitely* don’t listen to this unless you want to hear two aspies talk over each other for an hour.
New Episode with @mimeticmagic just dropped! In this one we talk about looping effects, diagnostic drift, the social construction of diagnostic categories, autism as a historically contingent phenomenon and much more!

Watching Nathan Fielder is fun because he says and acts exactly like I naturally do before post processing filters catch it before it comes out of my mouth.
Nathan Fielder is a GREAT example of someone who has broken free from relational automaticity, very inspiring to watch. He doesn't take bait that's thrown at him, and he doesn't even flinch. Someone tells him to do something, he calmly responds "why?" In stress, he stays curious

I often feel really alienated by other people because the things they say feel so foreign and intuitive to me but Nathan Fielder makes me feel less alone because he says things or acts a certain way and I go, "yeah, me too buddy"

I feel like we talk about this all the time like it is a very common thing that people talk about
Why does no one ever talk about how common it is for mentally ill people to abuse their romantic partners and their kids????

Thanks @newscientist for the very balanced article on the 'extreme male brain' theory of autism. The name of the theory has led to misunderstandings, so these days I just refer to the empathising-systemising (E-S) theory, and to its biological basis in the prenatal sex steroid theory of autism. The evidence for both theories is strong and well replicated

Making up autism: can reading philosopher Ian Hacking help us with the neurodiversity and overdiagnosis debate? cambridge.org/core/journals/… Oh yes... Ian Hacking and his 'Looping effects' may well turn out to be really important. Like what we said: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Finding out that someone didn't mean love in the same sense that you did isn't an autistic experience, that is a universal human experience.
That Autistic experience of finding out that “I love you” means something different in Neurotypical. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD

being trendy requires access to fashion blogs and pattern recognition
the propaganda i won’t fall for is “autistic girl whose special interest is being hot”. i don’t believe 95% of u. being conventionally attractive and trendy requires a level of social awareness

Pangram is good, but has some well-known failure modes, like: - A time you heard it didn't work - A school essay you wrote years ago that it flagged as AI (you don't have a link or the essay text handy) - A different AI detector got it wrong, and they're all the same, right?

I feel like saying "I had to do it and you can do it too" doesn't apply to people with profound autism.
I really don't care about how autistic someone is they should really need to learn how to get over certain things that make them that uncomfortable. I had to do it and you can do it too.

Prayer is one of the oldest and most research-supported interventions for trauma and mood disorder symptoms across cultures and faith, but y’all aren’t ready for that conversation yet. The human brain likely adapted to mindfulness and biofeedback since we worshipped the sun.

Even if your weapon is completely unloaded and safe doing this builds bad habits. Guns are dangerous. "The gun is always loaded" is a thing you drill into your head and practice so that safety is second nature when the gun is loaded. Gun bros are right about this.
Weird how all the gun bros going mental about this photo are such firearms experts but they don’t know what a safety inhibitor is. This weapon was physically incapable of firing. But again, they know this. What they’re really angry about is a woman in a hijab holding a gun.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
A safety device does not negate other firearm safety rules. Each rule and safety device is merely one failsafe in the safe use of a firearm. gunsafetyrules.nra.org

The difference between an explanation and excuse is that an excuse is trying to absolve you off your responsibility to make restitution or acknowledge wrong doing. You give an excuse when you think you have done nothing wrong and are pleading your case.
Being autistic is having people constantly think your explainations are excuses. In my experience, I always thought that full transparency was a key part of communication. So, I'd both apologize and explain why I did something. It almost always got misinterpreted as an excuse.

If a person is telling you to stop making excuses they telling you to accept responsibility for wrong doing. If you don't think you have done anything wrong you can give an excuse but if you have and you try to explain why you did something it comes off as dodging accountability.
