I love this genre. Was it said by a Nazi or a Zionist?

there's evidence that the use of AI in schools is delivering the opposite of "intellectual flourishing"—maybe in some bubbles the use of these models is leading to more reading and philosophical debates but I'm inclined to think that's an exception to the rule
AI IS AMAZING I know it's hip to worry about the decline in book reading and how chatbots will impoverish our brains. But TBH, this is not at all what I see. I wrote about how we're in this wild moment for intellectual flourishing and how all of us are the children of dancers.

Another force majeure has hit the AI industry
Holy smokes - NextDC From Bloomberg: Nextdc Ltd.’s shares plummeted after the data center operator said it was considering force majeure options and cut earnings guidance as community opposition delayed one of its major projects in Melbourne. The Australian firm revised its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization for the current fiscal year through June 2027 to between A$245 million ($172 million) and A$265 million, down from A$385 million to A$410 million, in a statement Wednesday.

Deeply ignorant, anti-human propaganda. There is no current technology that can understand things at all, much less understand them better than humans. In LLMs, every single token is plagiarized from people. There is no magic understanding fairy in GPUs. Get a grip.
If we want to continue progress in science, we must be prepared to acknowledge that the correct description of nature will eventually simply be too complicated for humans to understand. I do not think it is wise to make human understanding a requirement. AI is the way forward.

Watched Digger - a wild & visionary satire about the fossil fuel industry and politics. Great dialogues, often laughing-out-loud funny and disturbingly true. Not popular in the US but may well become a classic. Tom Cruise deserves an Oscar for his portrayal of oil boss Digger.

Das System hieß „Where‘s Daddy“.

Just been to see NAZA. For those of you who are of the opinion that ‘it’s complicated’ you’ll find out that it isn’t. It’s Genocide. The intent is blatant. Go see it.

NAZA was a tough one. The intentionality and callousness of the genocide is laid out, plain as day, by its architects and enablers. They expressed varying degrees of justification and remorse. One spoke of his guilt and then talked about how much fun it was in the next scene. Another said he was the same as the Nazis and then fished for reassurance with his next sentence. I was filled with such unceasing rage. I still am. How could they not see they were on the wrong side of this? They would listen to live feeds of children’s voices before pressing the button to bomb their house. 20 dead children. Zero targets killed. No time to feel bad about it because there’s more crowded houses to remotely bomb. They were offered therapists to help deal with the horrors they unleashed. They said there was no need. Nothing I say can adequately express what’s in this film. You just need to go and watch it. Please go see NAZA. It’s a tough one, but it’s incredibly important. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

This is fantastic. @BenAffleck understands and can reasonably explain something that many of the so-called AI "experts" seem determined to over complicate and mislead people on. In fact, many of these experts are rapidly losing credibility with people who actually understand how this technology works. Unfortunately, they've already convinced a lot of people that AI is something it isn't. And as the saying goes, it's easier to fool someone than to convince them they've been fooled. An LLM is a computer program. We designed it. We know the architecture, the mathematics, and how inference works. Much of the underlying code and research is open for anyone to inspect. All LLMs processes tokens through mathematical operations using learned weights and context to predict what comes next. The results can be astonishingly accurate, useful, and convincing. But the LLM isn't alive. It doesn't love you, hate you, care about you, or sit around contemplating its existence or understanding. And yet people insist that somewhere inside those matrix operations, consciousness has magically materialized. Seriously? This isn't biological life evolving in nature. It's software executing computations on hardware we designed and built. If you're claiming those computations somehow produce subjective experience, explain the mechanism (I'll wait...). The remarkable achievement here is that we've created software capable of convincingly emulating aspects of human intelligence and behavior. That's freakin' amazing and cause to celebrate the technology! But please stop confusing a computer program with a living, conscious being. It's absolutely not. The fact that so many people have fallen for that illusion is a testament to how convincing the technology has become. But here's the clincher: when we misunderstand this, and we start treating computer programs as conscious, independent beings, the legal implications could be disastrous. Suddenly, "the AI did it" becomes an excuse to shift blame away from the people and companies responsible for building, deploying, and operating these systems. AI cannot be held accountable. But people and companies can be, and must be held accountable. Ben gets it. More people should.
Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling “Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word." "That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person." "But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”

I’ve seen NAZA. It is not about Gaza or even about IDF rules of engagement. It is 100% a film about Israeli society. It is about how the most liberal, educated and enlightened socioeconomic elites among us could carry out such mass killing, some even while being well aware of it.
