My mom died yesterday, just shy of her 88th birthday. Here she is about to see the Iris Apfel documentary in 2014 with my brother. We all loved moviegoing. Moma would often check me out of school early to see a matinee. Then shopping at the bookstore. Books and movies and love.
A top-of-the-house bad seat for Cole Escola’s play, OH, MARY! at the Ahmanson Theater next month costs $226 plus $36.90 in fees for a total of $259.60. $260. The play, a riotous dazzler, no doubt, is 80 minutes long.

PBS has a superb 4-part mini-series, TRESPASSES, based on Louise Kennedy’s novel. Lola Petticrew and Tom Cullen star as lovers in 1975 Belfast. She is Protestant, he is Catholic and their secret affair is sensual and emotionally complex. A brilliant Gillian Anderson co-stars.
Almost a year after its release, REBUILDING, starring Josh O’Connor, is finally available to rent, and for only $5. It is one of O’Connor’s finest performances, and the gentlest of films. It has stayed with me. Written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman.

The moving REBUILDING, starring Josh O’Connor, came out last November and can be rented, but has yet to find a streaming deal. The recent OMAHA with its magnificent John Magaro performance—worthy of an awards push—may be in a similar limbo. Good movies fade away all the time.
As a ‘70s kid, I spent many an afternoon at the Doraville, GA Jerry Lewis Twin Cinema, watching horror movies all by myself ("Sssssss"!) and the occasional Disney revival. The theaters were a financial disaster for Jerry and Co. but a big hit with me.
