🎥 **Watch and share: *THC: The Driving Force to Psychosis.***
**Texans—and especially Texas taxpayers—deserve to know the consequences of THC before the state goes any further down the road of normalizing and commercializing its use.**
THC is not just another retail product. It is a **psychoactive drug associated with addiction, psychosis, and schizophrenia**—and the consequences don't stop with the individual. Families suffer.
Communities absorb the damage. Taxpayers are left paying for psychiatric crises, emergency care, criminal-justice involvement, disability, and homelessness.
**Texas should not build or promote a commercial THC industry first and ask questions about the human and taxpayer costs later.**
### The research should be a warning:
🧠 **Cannabis-induced psychosis had the highest pooled transition rate to schizophrenia among the substances examined** in a major systematic review and meta-analysis—about **34%, compared with 22% for amphetamine-induced psychosis.**
Source: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…
⚠️ **47.4% of people diagnosed with cannabis-induced psychosis later developed schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar disorder** in a large Danish study—the highest conversion rate among the substance-induced psychoses studied.
Source: psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.…
🚨 **Young men face an especially alarming risk.** Research highlighted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated that **as many as 30% of schizophrenia cases among men ages 21–30 might have been prevented in the absence of cannabis use disorder.** The underlying Danish research examined health records from more than **6 million people across five decades.**
Source: nida.nih.gov/news-events/new…
And, no, you don't need to predisposed to get psychotic from THC use. The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London concluded that daily high-potency cannabis use significantly increases the risk of psychosis, independent of genetic predisposition.
Source: neurosciencenews.com/psychos…
And a psychotic disorder can be only the beginning of the fallout.
Serious mental illness and substance-use disorders can be part of a devastating downward spiral: **psychiatric crises, hospitalization, family disruption, unemployment, criminal-justice involvement, housing instability, and homelessness.**
These consequences don't remain behind the closed doors of one family. **They become a community problem and a taxpayer burden.**
Read more about the connection between commercialized marijuana, serious mental illness, and homelessness: everybrainmatters.org/2025/1…
**Texas should confront these risks before expanding a commercial THC industry—not after the damage is done.**
**The public deserves the facts before policies that promote use—not after another family is already living with the consequences.**

Texas Is Connecting the Dots on THC
What happens when the consequences of THC extend beyond the person using it? Texas leaders are examining the connections between THC, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, healthcare, public safety, and the costs carried by families, communities, and taxpayers.
Our new article highlights testimony from families, physicians, researchers, law enforcement, and public-health officials—and why prevention, education, treatment, and recovery must be part of the solution—not promoting THC.
Texas has made progress, but the fight is not over.

Who profits from commercial THC—and who pays when families are harmed?
At the @TexasTribune Festival, I urged Texans to recognize the difference between policies that prevent drug use, promote it, and support recovery. When we promote THC, where can families turn for help—and who pays for the treatment they need?
Texas must put education, prevention, and accessible treatment and recovery first. Our families deserve answers and real support.

Texas must have a statewide public education campaign with a direct message: cannabis can cause psychosis.
Texans deserve clear, evidence-based information about this risk before they choose to use THC—not after a crisis occurs. Public education should not minimize, soften, or obscure this message. Informed consent starts with telling people what the science shows.
Education is prevention. Texans deserve the truth.

Violence can change a family’s life in an instant. We need to take every potential risk seriously.
A new review of 63 studies involving 265,079 people found that cannabis use was associated with higher odds of committing violence—about 2 times the odds in the general population and 2.5 times the odds among psychiatric patients. It was also associated with higher odds of being a victim of violence.
The people behind these numbers matter. So does making sure the public knows what the research found.

Let’s Get THC-Mess out of Texas!
I’m thankful for the chance to participate in today's discussion at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. I speak out because I care — Every Brain Matters(@EveryBrainMatt . It's important for Citizens for a Safe and Healthy Texas (@CitizensSafe) to be heard. America must listened to the Moms, to get out of this situation! THC can never be safely regulated due to its fat-soluble nature. Predicting who will develop psychosis is impossible—it's like Russian roulette. We only know that higher potency, increased use, and younger age, elevate the risk. Adults are also affected; many are experiencing psychosis because of THC across the country. In Austin, the streets are filled with young men suffering from psychosis and homelessness, and we must recognize THC as a major factor behind this.

🚨 A MAJOR STEP TOWARD ACCOUNTABILITY
The nation’s first class action lawsuits have been filed against major marijuana companies, alleging they marketed marijuana as medicinal while failing to adequately warn consumers about serious health risks.
For years, families harmed by marijuana have been asking for truth, transparency, and accountability. Their stories matter, and their voices deserve to be heard.
⚖️ Have you or someone you love been harmed by marijuana, hemp, or THC products? Every Brain Matters created a Legal Action Screening Guide to help families understand important questions to consider and document their experiences:

Cannabis addiction is rising—and the latest national data challenge the claim that marijuana has little addictive potential.
A study published in JAMA Psychiatry analyzed 186,823 U.S. adults from 2021–2024. Researchers found that past-year Cannabis Use Disorder increased among both men and women:
• Men: 7.3% to 9.3%
• Women: 4.5% to 5.6%
Moderate-to-severe cases also increased. Meanwhile, Alcohol Use Disorder remained statistically stable among men and declined among women.
The findings among adults ages 18–20 are especially concerning. In 2024, Cannabis Use Disorder was more prevalent than Alcohol Use Disorder—even though alcohol was used more widely:
• Men: CUD 14.9% vs. AUD 10.4%
• Women: CUD 14.5% vs. AUD 10.3%
Greater access, normalization, and increasingly potent THC products demand stronger education, prevention, early intervention, and treatment—not continued denial of marijuana’s addictive potential.

Cannabis addiction is rising—and new national research challenges the claim that cannabis has “low addictive potential.”
A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry, examining data from 186,823 U.S. adults, found that from 2021 to 2024, past-year cannabis use disorder (CUD) increased among both men and women. Moderate-to-severe cannabis use disorder also increased.
Among adults ages 18–20 in 2024, cannabis use disorder was more prevalent than alcohol use disorder—even though alcohol was used more widely. The researchers concluded that the increasing prevalence and severity of CUD challenges the perception that cannabis has low addictive potential.
As cannabis products become more accessible and normalized, families deserve accurate information about the risks of addiction and cannabis use disorder.

🚨 TEXAS: PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT HAPPENED IN CALIFORNIA
A new City Journal investigation reports that Chinese nationals are operating large-scale illegal marijuana grows in California, with the Siskiyou County sheriff describing links in some cases to Chinese gangs and “associations that link back to Communist China.” The investigation also reports toxic, banned pesticides at illegal grow sites and describes potential CCP connections that authorities have investigated.
The article goes further in suggesting broader CCP involvement, but those broader claims remain allegations and theories—not established findings.
Texas should learn from California.
Marijuana commercialization does not automatically eliminate the illegal market. Texans should be asking:
Who is growing it?
Who is financing it?
What chemicals are being used?
And who ultimately pays the price?
🇺🇸 Protect Texas families. Protect Texas communities.

⚠️ THC drinks are exposing a serious problem with our nation’s hemp policy—and Texas should pay attention.
A new Washington Examiner op-ed by researcher Matthew E. Rossheim, PhD, raises important questions about intoxicating products marketed as “hemp-derived,” including where the THC actually comes from and whether regulators can reliably determine its source once it is added to a beverage.
A label doesn’t change the drug. THC is THC.
As Texas considers the future of intoxicating THC products, public health and safety should come before commercialization.

⚠️ **Texas policymakers should pay attention.**
A study published in *Addiction* found that **adolescent cannabis use disorder increased following recreational marijuana legalization in California**, reversing a previous downward trend.
As Texas debates marijuana policy, we should learn from states that legalized before us. **Protecting youth and preventing cannabis addiction must come before expanding a commercial THC market.**
Texas has the opportunity to choose prevention over commercialization.

🇨🇦 Canada legalized marijuana with a promise to protect youth. A new 2026 study raises a serious warning about how that promise has played out.
Researchers in BMC Public Health report that cannabis use has increased across age groups since legalization, with particular concern for youth and young adults ages 16–24. Youth, parents, and service providers called for less access and availability, stronger public education, better treatment services, more family support, and less normalization of cannabis use.
Texas still has a choice. We do not have to repeat the mistakes of jurisdictions that allowed commercial interests to outpace public health protections.
Texas should learn from Canada and put children, families, mental health, and public safety before THC industry profits.

On July 7, 2026, the Texas Senate Committee on Health & Human Services heard testimony about the public impacts of commercialized THC derived from hemp.
THC is not just another retail product. It is a psychoactive drug that is a driving force to psychosis and addiction. Behind these consequences are real people, grieving families, and communities struggling to pick up the pieces.
