#DailyLincoln #101 From the diary of James A. Garfield: He [Thaddeus Stevens] expostulated with President Lincoln against the appointment of [Simon] Cameron as Sec'y of War, and intimated rather broadly that Cameron was dishonest. Lincoln says, "You mean to intimate that Cameron would steal?" "Well," said Stevens, "I do not think he would steal a hot stove." This was too good to keep and Lincoln told Cameron of it. Cameron called on Stevens and complained bitterly of his attack and Stevens promised to take back what he had said. He then called on L incoln land said, "I have come up to take back what I said about Cameron. I am inclined to think I was wrong in saying he would not steal a hot stove."

#DailyLincoln #98 "School-boys know that Wilberforce, and Granville Sharpe, helped that cause forward; but who can now name a single man who labored to retard it? Remembering these things I can not but regard it as possible that the higher object of this contest may not be completely attained within the term of my natural life. But I can not doubt either that it will come in due time." - Abraham Lincoln, ca. July 1858

#DailyLincoln #97 "If I had had my way, this war would never have been commenced. If I had been allowed my way this war would have been ended before this, but we find it still continues; and we must believe that He permits it for some wise purpose of his own, mysterious and unknown to us; and though with our limited understandings we may not be able to comprehend it, yet we cannot but believe, that he who made the world still governs it." - Abraham Lincoln, October 26, 1862

#DailyLincoln #93 "He was a self made man, the architect of his own fortune. And the American people—indebted to themselves for themselves, saw in him, a full length portrait of themselves. In him they saw their better qualities represented—incarnated, and glorified—and as such they loved him." - Frederick Douglass, June 1, 1865 h/t @LincolnDouglass

#DailyLincoln #92 "This lady, Abigail C. Berea, had a husband and three sons in the war, and has been a nurse herself, without pay, during nearly the whole war. Her husband was killed at Gettysburg, and one of her sons also has died in the service. One other son she is willing to leave in the service where he still is, but the youngest, James H. Benjamin, private in Co. K. 104 N.Y. vols. and who is in poor health, she asks to have discharged. Let it be done." - Abraham Lincoln to Edwin Stanton, October 15, 1863

They might not be producing pennies anymore, but Abraham Lincoln isn't disappearing from our pocket change. On October 21, the US Mint will release a new Gettysburg Address quarter for America's 250th anniversary. Lincoln will be on the front and the back will feature a line from the Gettysburg Address. #LincolnToday

#DailyLincoln #87 On this day in 1857, Lincoln defended a 70-year-old widow named Melissa Goings, who was on trial for the murder of her husband, Roswell. The two had been living “rather disagreeably” for some time when, on April 14 of that year, they got into a fight over whether or not to open a window. Roswell allegedly tried to choke Melissa; she responded by whacking him in the head with a stick of firewood. As the trial got underway, Mrs. Goings was nowhere to be found. A court officer accused Lincoln of encouraging her to escape, but Lincoln denied the charge. “I didn’t run her off,” he said. “She wanted to know where she could get a drink of water, and I told her there was mighty good water in Tennessee.”
