Fleetwood Town beating Arsenal on penalties and the Captain Pugwash theme playing instantly is quite a piece of radio. Recorded from BBC Radio 5 Live tonight.

The problem at Burnley is at the ownership level. and that is widely known in the game. There is a reason why it was so hard to find a new manager. It would be easy to sack Hayen but its not easy to change owners with such complex finances and structures. Worrying times.

35 years ago today: Great Britain shocked the USA to win 4x400m relay gold at the Tokyo World Championships. Switching Roger Black to the first leg and Kris Akabusi to the anchor leg proved to be a tactical masterstroke. One of the finest British track wins in history 🇬🇧🥇

Bob Blair passed away at the age of 94. He was the 5th oldest living Test cricketer and the man behind one of the most inspiring stories in New Zealand cricket history. In 1953, NZ toured South Africa for 5 match Test series. During the 2nd Test, 21 year old fast bowler Bob Blair who had made his Test debut only a few months earlier took a wicket on the opening day. The next day was Christmas and rest day. But on the night of Dec 24, tragedy struck back home in NZ. The Tangiwai rail disaster claimed 151 lives after a train crashed when a railway bridge collapsed. Among those who lost their lives was Nerissa Love, Bob Blair's fiance When play resumed on Dec 26, NZ announced that Bob would not take any further part in the match. As New Zealand lost wicket after wicket, everyone assumed the innings was over when the 9th wicket fell. Bob was not expected to bat. But then in one of cricket's most emotional moments, he walked to the crease. Bob balir added 33 runs for the final wicket. The partnership itself was small and New Zealand eventually lost the Test but the courage behind it made it one of the most inspiring moments in cricket history. Since 2024, Test series between New Zealand and South Africa is called Tangiwai Shield named after the Tangiwai disaster RIP Bob (1932-2026)

Outrageous 🙄
He is far from being the only highly qualified Lancashire member volunteering for the board to be rejected by email without an interview by the "HR team". The way the club management have treated many members who've applied to the board is very poor.

I asked Greg Chappell for his autograph in 1975 when the Aussies played at Hove. “You’ve got no chance sonny”, he said “So you might as well go home and play with yourself”. Classless then, classless as a captain too in 1981. Marsh, Lillee, Gilmour and others all great.
Richie Benaud: “One of the worst things I have ever seen done on a cricket field” #OnThisDay in 1981, when captain Greg Chappell asked his brother Trevor Chappell to bowl underarm ball. The third brother (Ian Chappell) on air “No Greg, you can't do that.”
