Sorry guys - this is a lousy policy call from NZF.
The current tax is easily justified on basic environmental economics grounds. Climate change needs addressing through consistent, reasonable policies, and the fuel surcharge is a good one.
Just Announced: NZFirst to Remove Climate Tax From Fuel
New Zealand First will abolish the ETS tax from fuel which means immediately fuel will be 12 to 14 cents a litre cheaper.
Over the past year fuel consumers have paid 12 cents a litre of petrol, and 14 cents a litre of diesel under the ETS, adding to the excessive cost of our imported fuel.
A total of $850 million has been taken away in the past year from consumers and businesses and allocated for the purchasing of Carbon Credits as part of the ETS linked to the Paris Agreement.
New Zealand First will remove this burden on consumers and businesses over the next term of government.
There is no substitute for diesel for industry. Likewise, ordinary consumers have suffered too much with the cost of petrol.
People need to understand that when you propagate woke green ideology, it costs New Zealanders while delivering us nothing.
If a Green/Labour government is elected they will put even more ETS costs on New Zealanders as they did in 2021 when they pushed ETS charges up to 20 cents a litre, taking $1 billion out of the pockets of NZ consumers.
The frustrating thing about this is that, in the absence of a breakdown into gross emissions by gas, and the contribution of sinks, it's hard to know what it means for the climate.

A large amount of decarbonization is actually pretty insensitive to the choice of administration - so this result is unsurprising.
Introducing an ETS does seem to make a difference, but a lot of other decisions are second-order in terms of the effects on CO2 emissions
Perhaps the best way to deter political murder.
Pour encourager les autres and all that

I have a lot of sympathy with this view.
The world as a whole is nowhere near on target to comply with the aspirational goals it articulated in the Paris Agreement.
The CCC's response was that NZ should redouble its efforts. That's moral posturing rather than serious analysis.

In response to a couple of pretty mild questions, I had a far-right sociologist @Angry_Sociology crash out on me today - pretty hilarious, really, and just more evidence that the disciple has a problem with views that differ from theirs.
Called me a climate denier. So here's an anonymous sociologist of whatever saying someone* with 100 papers on climate change, 2x IPCC LA, etc is a denier, on the basis that they disagree about entirely different issues, is a denier. All class.
