Olivine amendments can alter soil organic carbon storage in ways that depend on treatment duration and the availability of easily degradable carbon. In a 55-week soil microcosm experiment, researchers found that olivine alone reduced total soil organic carbon. When combined with glucose, however, olivine initially suppressed microbial carbon uptake but eventually increased microbial biomass and mineral-associated organic matter beyond levels achieved with glucose alone, while reducing respiratory carbon losses. These later-stage gains strengthened alongside geochemical evidence of mineral weathering. Nanoscale imaging further revealed that newly accumulated organic carbon was concentrated within existing organic and mineral microsites, rather than directly on olivine or newly formed clay surfaces. The findings suggest that enhanced weathering may promote soil carbon storage when labile carbon is available, primarily by influencing microbial processing rather than simply creating new mineral surfaces for carbon binding. The results highlight the importance of soil carbon availability and longer-term responses when assessing enhanced weathering as a carbon removal strategy. nature.com/articles/s43247-0…

OMG! This brilliant man just figured something out! Trump recently made a post about every Democrat vote equaling 3 Republican votes. Cryptic, right? Well, we're hearing that, in multiple states, people are trying to vote Democrat, but the voting machines are changing their votes to Republican! It's taking them 3 or 4 times to correct it! This could be the reason why Trump said that! RetrievalResists@Retrievals1, stated that "Every time they vote they're really making 4 choices. 3 for the opponent. 1 for the democrat."

Aircraft and airships are assessed as alternatives to permanent towers for dispersing calcite particles in proposed regional solar radiation modification schemes intended to offset climate warming. The comparison finds that aircraft require substantially lower capital investment, since a small fleet can operate from one airport, whereas towers need multiple structures and redundant equipment. However, aircraft incur higher operating costs because their energy requirements outweigh labour savings, and they transport calcite into the atmosphere less efficiently than fixed towers. Airships offer better payload efficiency, bringing their energy use closer to that of permanent towers. Dispersing particles at greater altitudes could also reduce potential health impacts on local populations. Removing towers from conservation areas may further limit ecological disturbance and preserve scenic landscapes. The findings highlight trade-offs between infrastructure costs, operational efficiency and environmental impacts when selecting delivery systems for regional solar radiation modification. ideas.repec.org/a/ajn/ijoirs…

Evaluating the climate and human consequences of solar radiation modification (#SRM), a new dissertation examines spectrally selective solar radiation modification (SSRM), changes in sky appearance under stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), and effects on human heat stress. Using CESM2 simulations under quadrupled atmospheric CO₂, the first chapter finds that SSRM brings global-mean precipitation closer to preindustrial levels than uniformly selective modification at comparable temperatures, but may not fully restore precipitation. It also produces distinct regional and vertical responses, including enhanced Antarctic cooling, Arctic warming and an equatorial precipitation dipole. The second chapter models cloudless skies and finds that SAI-related changes are most noticeable around twilight, while sulfate-induced sky whitening at a forcing of −2 W/m² may be undetectable for roughly half of observers. The third chapter estimates that SAI could reduce uncompensable heat-stress frequency by 35–45% at 0.1 m/s wind speeds and 80–90% at 0.5 m/s from around 2050, although the latter estimate reflects fewer baseline exceedances. Together, the chapters highlight how global climate outcomes can conceal important regional, perceptual and physiological effects. dash.harvard.edu/entities/pu…

‘Reduced sea ice cover and reinvigorated circulation release stored carbon back to the atmosphere, promoting interglacial warming.’
The mechanisms behind atmospheric carbon dioxide drawdown during glacial periods remain uncertain, particularly how Antarctic sea ice and ocean circulation interact. A new research finds that their combined expansion and reorganisation can enhance carbon sequestration in the ocean abyss, lowering atmospheric CO₂, even though either change alone causes the ocean to release CO₂. Together, expanded sea ice and altered meridional overturning circulation reduce ocean-atmosphere carbon exchange in the Southern Ocean, strengthening biological carbon storage without requiring external changes to the biological pump. By limiting the release of carbon-rich waters brought to the surface, these changes favour the return of remineralised carbon to the deep ocean. The findings identify a reinforcing feedback between atmospheric cooling, Antarctic sea ice expansion and ocean circulation that may help explain carbon drawdown during glaciations. science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

Safely withdrawing stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) may depend on declining greenhouse gas forcing and how quickly aerosol-induced cooling responds to changes in injection. A new study [Preprint] tests an annual feedback controller in two reduced-complexity climate models, FaIR 2.2.4 and Hector 3.5.0, under matched non-CO₂ forcing and a deliberately ambitious carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathway. Across 1,500 combinations of aerosol lifetime and model tests, median global temperature in 2060 remains between 1.200 and 1.206°C, and none of the 1,192 trajectories with complete 20-year post-phaseout records shows a rising temperature trend. The controller’s forcing ceiling never becomes binding, with phaseout instead emerging from the feedback mechanism. Although temperature projections remain similar across the models, their long-term CO₂ outcomes diverge. The findings are conditional on sustained deep CDR and the tested assumptions, leaving regional hydrology, aerosol microphysics, ozone chemistry and governance unresolved. researchsquare.com/article/r…

AS FEARED: "The world’s clouds are changing. They are covering less overall area and are dimming, with the effect that they reflect less solar radiation back into space. This increase in solar absorption is a major cause of the accelerating warming we are now experiencing."
Great piece by Tom Harris on cloud feedback The world's cloud cover is reducing, which makes the planet hotter This may be why Miocene Climatic Optimum temperatures were 7 - 8C up on pre-industrial for CO2 levels of just 400 - 600ppm Very, very, scary substack.com/home/post/p-220…

ReflectOrbital is planning to launch a 18×18 \,m mirror in space at a ∼ 600\,km altitude to illuminate a 2.5 \,km radius circular patch on Earth. The pilot satellite, called EARENDIL-1, is a pathfinder for a constellation of ∼ 50,000 larger mirrors, each with 54×54 \,m in diameter, with the explicit goal to provide space-borne illumination on Earth. We calculate the sky brightness caused by the Rayleigh scattering and aerosol scattering of the incoming beam from one such satellite and by the light reflected back by the illuminated patch, for various atmospheric properties and ground albedos under cloud-free conditions. We demonstrate that the light pollution caused by one of these satellites is very significant, altering the nighttime environment up to distances of ∼ 30\,kms. The results show that for an observer within the beam of a single 54\,m satellite, the mirror will appear as a −16.7 \,mag point-like source, i.e.~about 4 magnitudes brighter than the full moon. The diffuse sky background will be similar to the dusk sky shortly after sunset; too bright to see even the brightest stars. From a distance of 14\,km, the glow from a single mirror will exceed the luminance of the full moon sky for majority of the sky. From a distance of 34\,km the sky will still appear brighter than the moon-lit sky in the direction of the beam. If 400 such mirrors illuminate the same patch simultaneously, the glow will be obvious from 80\,kms. Video 📹Don Davis vimeo.com/1237489863
