ALT Visual representations of sex chromosomes. We do not recommend representing sex chromosomes using lumpy, quasi-realistic textures, as this may reflect the common misconception that Y chromosomes are shaped like the letter “Y.” We also suggest avoiding including double helix shapes within chromosomes, as this may introduce or reinforce incorrect ideas about the structure of sex chromosomes. We instead suggest using unreplicated representations of sex chromosomes that appear more like the actual shape of the chromosome. The unreplicated format may help reduce confusion about X chromosomes being named for the X-shape of the replicated structure. Unaltered letters without stylized colors or textures may be a suitable representation if the exact structure of the sex chromosomes is not the intended purpose of the representation.
