Davante is putting up more teach tape tonight. He doesn’t just make his move out of his stance. He hop steps toward the DB’s toes to threaten and gives a nice jab inside. Which leaves the corner on his heels, off balance, reaching, & it’s over as soon as it starts. 🧠

Can’t waste movement at the goal line. Gets to the corners toes, uses tempo at the top to freeze him, & finishes it off with a nice split release into the slant. Surgical route by Malachi Toney.

Receivers have to understand that identifying coverage is only part of the job. Knowing whether the defense is in Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover 3, Quarters, man, or match gives you the structure but leverage tells you how that structure is actually being used against your route Before the snap, the receiver should be processing more than just the coverage shell. Who is the primary defender? Is he inside, outside, or head-up? How much cushion is he giving? Where is the help? What space does the concept require, and how is the defense trying to take that space away? That is where leverage becomes so important Inside leverage does not automatically mean release outside. Outside leverage does not automatically mean release inside. The receiver has to understand the route, the help structure, the split, the field position, and the quarterback’s timing before deciding how to attack the defender The release should always serve the route. The goal is not to win the first two yards just to say you won the release. The goal is to change the defender’s picture, close cushion, manipulate his feet and hips, preserve route space, and create the correct throwing window for the quarterback Receivers also have to keep processing after the snap. Pre-snap leverage is information, not a guarantee. Defenders can bail, rotate, trail, bracket, pass routes off, or change leverage as the play develops. The best receivers see that movement, confirm the picture, and stay within the structure of the concept. From a coaching perspective, that is the biggest point: leverage should never become an excuse to freelance. Route depth, spacing, timing, landmarks, and quarterback expectations still matter Coverage tells you the structure. Leverage tells you how the defense is protecting space The concept tells you how to solve it
