This looks fun, but the defense here is so unrealistic it borders on misleading. Let’s talk about how this can actually hurt decision-making for real games. ⸻ 1.In this 2v2 clip, the big rolls wide and gets a clean catch + score twice. But let’s be honest— In a real 5v5 game? •That pass is stolen. •That roll is tagged. Any decent defensive team erases these reads. 2.When we remove the help defense, spacing pressure/constraint, and timing of 5v5, we aren’t training decision-making—we’re rehearsing fake ones. We reward reads that look right but aren’t available in an actual game. 3.Small-sided games can be valuable. But poorly designed SSGs with bad constraints just teach players how to score in drills—not how to play in games. It’s not just about playing live—it’s about playing representative. 4.This is the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: Bad SSGs give players the illusion of good decisions. But when the real game shows up—and those same decisions lead to turnovers, clogged lanes, or no-advantage passes—the player’s confused. 5.I get frustrated when these clips are held up as the gold standard, while more structured, coach-led reps are dismissed as robotic. A good block rep, rooted in actual 5v5 tactics, can teach the right reads faster than fake freedom ever will. 6.The real skill is designing your drills like you design your gameplan: •What decisions will be available? •What reads do we want? •How will spacing + timing change them? That’s where the constraint lives. Not just in a 7-second shot clock. 7.Let’s stop pretending every 2v2 drill is game-like just because it’s live. If your defense is fake, the development is too
