“Any great player wants to be coached hard.
Coaches take players to levels they can’t take themselves.
What great player doesn’t want to be coached hard?”
Being coachable means caring more about getting better than being right.

Kyle Shanahan explains how sometimes a leader is the only person in someone’s life willing to tell them the truth
“My dad always said, ‘Just always be honest with guys.’ It’s something I’ve always done. I think it’s hurt me with probably two or three players in my career. Some people don’t like what you have to say.”
“But I’ve also learned sometimes you’re the only person who tells them the truth. Some of these guys get so distorted. Uncles and agents and girlfriends or wives, they care about them, but they don’t know what the three-technique was supposed to do or what the coverage was.”
“Not everybody knows the big picture. When you have to have that tough conversation, they know I’m not trying to hide from anything.”
“I explain to them, ‘This is what I do. This is what I’m responsible for. I’m responsible for putting out the best team possible for the organization.’ If I don’t do that, my daughter might have to move schools again. I might have to fire this coach. I might have to cut this other player.”
“It’s not a threat. You are running a business. You are still the boss. We all want everyone to get paid. We want everyone to be good. But you’ve got to remind people what your job is sometimes.”
“I didn’t care if coaches yelled at me. I just knew when someone was teaching me and when someone was right. My biggest thing has been: I just want to teach people. Nothing’s worse than when you see coaches doing something based off someone else watching them.”
“They raise their voice because the GM is out on the field, or the owner, or the head coach is right there, so they yell at that guy harder in front of the team to cover their ass. Players know that. Players are smart.”

Some leaders walk into a room trying to be seen.
Others walk into a room trying to help others feel seen.
This is the difference between being a "spotlight" leader and a "lighthouse" leader.
One is concerned with their own image. The other is focused on service and guidance.
Football coaching is one of the least developed professions in the world. A top-down problem - NFL teams hire based on connections, not talent. No formal program to identify, train, teach or develop coaches. Wild for a profession where top earners are making 8 figures.
Reminds me of when I talked to Sam Darnold before a Vikings game. He told me the first time anybody ever taught him and spent time on the true details of something as simple as Cover 3 was when he got to San Francisco. The why behind each defenders technique and responsibility and how they are being coached.
Think about that. 3rd pick and 6th year in the NFL.

You can’t expect to maximize player development without investing in the development of the people responsible for it.
Athletes are learning from more coaches, specialists, and outside experts than ever before. Most importantly, the development of your players cannot continuously outpace the development of your staff.
Eventually, that gap will limit everyone.
Organizations that separate themselves will be the ones that invest just as aggressively in developing their coaches and staff.

John Harbaugh: “If you’re not organized, you’re not a good coach.”
Especially during individual.
No long lines. No wasted reps. No drills just because that’s how you were taught them.
Every rep should prepare your players for something they’ll actually have to do on game day.

Pete Carroll told Steve Kerr the offense and defense you run doesn't matter, and that your values are really the blueprint for building an NBA dynasty:
“How are you going to coach your team?”
“You mean what offense are we going to run? What defense?”
“No, no, no. That stuff doesn’t matter.”
“Coaching is really about values.”
“When you think about the greatest teams, you remember the vibe, the aura that existed when you walked into the building every day.”
“You need to think about what your team is going to feel.”
“If your values come through in everything you do: the way you carry yourself and the way the team practices... then your values take hold and the culture takes hold.”
“Go home and think about your life, your values and what they are.”
Coach Kerr ended up choosing:
📊 Competitiveness
😀 Joy
🧘 Mindfulness
💙 Compassion
These four traits became the foundation and north star for every system he built within the Golden State Warriors organization.
“Pete taught me how to connect personal values to the way you operate.”
“That’s how you really get a culture going.”
