Dear AAU Parents,
Please take a little advice from a parent who has been around AAU basketball as a Coach & parent for 20+ years.
Stop chasing imaginary rankings from paid services
like PGH and cool social media posts from programs that over hype players on socials because that is all they can offer. Don't get caught up with trainers who are only worried about your children when they are in their gym.
Ask real questions of program directors about approach on player development,
college relationships and track record of getting players to college programs. Ask directors about recruiting plans for their players. Pay attention to programs that retain players and are not out recruiting over entire rosters year over year. Track record & trust between families & programs matters; especially in a rapidly changing recruiting landscape, you better be with a program that is committed to all their players and not just a few high profile girls.
The top of EVERY circuit has really good players/teams but the bottom of EVERY circuit has bad teams too. Being on an EYBL or 3SSB team, and playing 6-8 mpg can really hurt your recruitment. Not every program is a fit for every player/family but PLEASE do your homework!!
Have honest discussions about potential level of play in college and where your child might fit. Be very weary of anyone who only talks about D1.
Winning games in AAU is nice and hopefully your daughter is competitive and wants to win but it ultimately doesn't mean anything and not many college coaches are paying attention to the score unless one team is getting smoked. In fact, a coach might pay more attention to how your daughter is acting as a player when they are losing vs how they are playing in a 25pt win.
Good luck to all as the girls get prepared for the High School season.

Basketball has a lying problem. Everybody says they want to win. Until winning means fewer shots, harder defense, a smaller role, passing up good for great, and cheering when you thought you’d play more. Everybody wants the trophy. Few want the truth it takes to earn it.

There are 3 fights a team has to fight daily:
1. Division from within (chemistry);
2. The competition (opponent);
3. Outside influences.
Remember, ships don't sink because of the water on the outside of them. Ships sink because of the water that gets inside of them.

💯 The #1 question that ALL PLAYERS ask…“How can I play more?” 👇

🤷🏽♂️Can you RUN, CUT & CRASH?

How your kid ends up and what they get is a direct reflection of the decisions YOU made. No one twists your arm and forces you to make certain decisions. You picked and decided the AAU team, Middle School, High School, Trainer, phone time, video game time, gf\bf time,etc. On you!

Rare Kobe Bryant footage on why he never feared failure.
This mindset explains everything.

If losing doesn’t bother you, winning probably doesn’t mean enough to you.
The best competitors take responsibility because they care deeply about the result, the team, and the standard.
Caring deeply comes with a cost but so does becoming great.
As parents we should hope & pray that our children have some experiences along the way where they are not excused or enabled from all their inevitable struggles. There is no better place than in athletics for this experience. ⏩️

Had a great visit with @NKUNorseWBB yesterday. It was fun watching practice, meeting the team, and touring the facilities. Thank you @coachjeffhans @coach_gabbyj for all of your time.
Great connecting with @M14Hoops_Girls teammate Joy Martin.

Extra shots before & after practice add up
Extra ball handling before practice & games add up
Extra lifts add up
Extra conditioning after practice adds up
Extra film study adds up
The “extra” always makes a difference, even if it’s small
If it was easy, everyone would do it

Games games and more games. Are kids getting better? There’s nothing to support they are. They get hurt more and have less interest in winning. Why your offers never come…

Damian Lillard says too many highly regarded young players are surrounded by “yes men” that tell them they are great
Once they get to the next level, when their talent isn’t enough to get them through, they struggle with working hard and being stable 🗣️
