Rest in peace to former Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach Larry Gay, who passed away at the age of 75. A Winchester, Kentucky native and standout at George Rogers Clark High School, Gay went on to play college basketball at Florida State, where he was a three-year letterman from 1971-74. He was a member of the Seminoles’ historic 1971-72 team that advanced all the way to the NCAA championship game, where Florida State fell to UCLA and John Wooden. Gay eventually returned to Kentucky and became part of another storied college basketball program, spending seven seasons on Denny Crum’s staff at Louisville from 1989-96. During his time on the Cardinals’ bench, Louisville made six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1993. From Winchester to Florida State and eventually Louisville, Gay spent a significant portion of his life around the game of basketball and made an impact at every stop. Our thoughts are with Coach Gay’s family, friends, former teammates, players and everyone whose life he touched. Rest in peace, Coach Larry Gay. 🕊️
