Homeless at 15. A football coach saw something in me I didn’t know I had— POTENTIAL. I went from sitting on the bench to becoming First Team All-State and captain of an undefeated team. I went from never winning a wrestling match to never losing one. I went from straight F’s to straight A’s, a Cornell University education, and the opportunity to keep playing the game I loved — FOOTBALL. It was the first team in my life I had set any goals for myself because it was the first time in my life I had someone I wanted to make proud. It didn’t take a village. It just took ONE MAN who gave a damn about me and that man changed the trajectory of my life. And that’s exactly why the JEFF RUBY FOUNDATION exists. With your help, we’re finding loving parents who give a damn about making a difference in the lives of at-risk kids.❤️🙏

“Don’t ever coach a player for who they are today, you have to coach them for what you know they can become.” A coach who cares about you won’t let your current habits limit your future. That’s why they keep asking for more. They believe there’s more in you.

If coaching offends you more than losing bothers you, your priorities are backwards. Hear it. Own it. Fix it. The easier you are to coach, the harder you become to beat.

Absolutely terrible officiating in that moment.
Another terribly officiated moment from the Big Ten Conference. He *was* down inbounds but the referee signaled that he was out of bounds. Then they apparently changed the call and didn't tell Indiana.

Effort is the highest form of respect. Not just for yourself or your coaches, but for the game & every player who built that standard before you. Respect the game. Show up. Compete. Empty the tank. One day the noise all fades & your effort is all that remains. That’s your legacy!

How to stay an average team: 1. Set reasonable goals. 2. Take 3 years to build the actual standards required. 3. Wait until you earn the right to aim higher. All that sounds like healthy team-building, but it's dead wrong and it's anti-competitive. Whatever you aim at sets the responsibilities, the expectations, and the effort behind it. Set reasonable goals and you'll get reasonable effort, but you'll never get the effort required to win. Nobody works like a champion if the goal is reasonable. Reasonable goals hand everyone an excuse before the season starts. Give people an option to be less than the best, and they'll take it. Teams that aim lower act weaker. Less effort. Weak discipline. Fragile confidence that cracks under the adversity of unforgiving competitive situations. Teams that aim higher act stronger. When the goal is to be the best (THE BEST!), people will start acting like it. More effort. Stronger discipline. Enduring confidence that gets stronger the more it gets tested, win or lose. Don't put limits on what your team can do. There is only one aim worth choosing in a competitive arena: BE THE BEST TEAM. Period. It's not a prediction or promise. It's a pursuit. And it's necessary because it creates the reference point for measuring every day of work: IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE US THE BEST?
