Curt Flood at seven is interesting for a reason that has nothing to do with his glove. He won seven Gold Gloves in center for the Cardinals and once went 226 straight games without an error, but he is remembered because he refused a trade to Philadelphia after the 1969 season and sued baseball over the reserve clause. He lost the case and lost his career. An arbitrator gave players free agency in 1975 anyway, six years after he refused that trade, and every contract signed since owes something to a center fielder who gave up his prime to make the point. Paul Blair at four is the placement I will defend without hesitation. Watching him play behind those Orioles pitching staffs was a clinic in where to stand before the ball was hit.
